I’ll restore military ties with US –President Elect Gen Muhammadu Buhari

The President-elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday said his administration would restore military cooperation with the United States of America.

In an article published by the New York Times in its Tuesday edition, Buhari promised to among other things reformed the military.

The outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration had cancelled the training component of its military cooperation with the US citing a lack of sincerity on the part of the Americans for its decision.

But Buhari said, “My administration would welcome the resumption of a military training agreement with the United States, which was halted during the previous administration. We must, of course, have better coordination with the military campaigns our African allies, like Chad and Niger, are waging in the struggle against Boko Haram. But, in the end, the answer to this threat must come from within Nigeria.”

Buhari also said he would deploy additional troops in the battle foul away from civilian areas in the south and the north central parts of the country.

In the article, the President-elect said, in the fight to end the Boko Haram insurgency, “We must start by deploying more troops to the front and away from civilian areas in central and southern Nigeria where for too long they have been used by successive governments to quell dissent.

“We must work closer with our neighbours in coordinating our military efforts so an offensive by one army does not see their country’s rid of Boko Haram only to push it across the border onto their neighbour’s territory.”

A member of the Buhari team, who pleaded for anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media said, “Without being told, you should know that what he is simply saying is that under his administration, the military will revert to their constitutional role of defending the nation against external aggression QED.”

It was also gathered that the military would be overhauled and professionalised while the police would be better empowered to take the leading role in internal security.

According to the New York Times article, which carried Buhari’s byline, the incoming administration will aside from using the military to deal with the terrorists’ threat, it will pay greater attention to counter-terrorism initiatives.

Buhari noted that his administration would seek to address why young people were attracted to join the sect. He identified some of the reasons to include poverty and ignorance.

He said, “Indeed Boko Haram – which translates in English, roughly, as “western education is sinful” – preys on the perverted belief that the opportunities that education brings are sinful.

“If you are starving and young, and in search of answers as to why your life is so difficult, fundamentalism can be alluring. We know this for a fact because former members of Boko Haram have admitted it: They offer impressionable young people money and the promise of food, while the group’s mentors twist their minds with fanaticism.

“So, we must be ready to offer the parts of our country affected by this group an alternative. Boosting education will be a direct counter-balance to Boko Haram’s appeal.

“In particular we must educate more young girls, ensuring they will grow up to be empowered through learning to play their full part as citizens of Nigeria and pull themselves up and out of poverty. Indeed, we owe it to the schoolgirls of Chibok to provide as best an education as possible for our fellow young citizens.”

He observed that Boko Haram feeds off despair, lack of hope that things can improve. The former Head-of State also argued that by attacking a school, and kidnapping more than 200 schoolgirls, it sought to strike at the very place where hope for the futurewas being nurtured, and the promise of a better Nigeria.

“It is our intention to show Boko Haram that it will not succeed,” he said.

The retired army general also promised that his administration would not only defeat the sec

Arizona cop hitting man with car

Police in Arizona said Tuesday that an officer who intentionally used his car to run into a suspect with a rifle probably saved the man's life.

The man's lawyer strongly disagrees. Video of the incident has stirred debate about what type of force police should have used to detain a man with a gun.

"Everything in the video seems to point towards an obvious excessive use of force. It is miraculous that my client isn't dead," said attorney Michelle Cohen-Metzger.

The incident was recorded February 19 on the dashcam of two Marana police cars that were following the suspect, 36-year-old Mario Valencia.

In one video, an officer who was tailing Valencia at slow speed reports over the radio that the suspect has fired one round in the air with a rifle he is accused of stealing that morning from a Walmart.

Another patrol car zooms past, runs into the man from behind then hits a short cinder block wall next to a driveway. Video from Officer Michael Rapiejko's camera shows the officer running the man over and the windshield smashing as the car hits the wall.

"Oh Jesus Christ. Man down," the officer in the first car says.

Police in Marana, which is about a half-hour from Tucson, have justified Rapiejko's actions.

"If we're going to choose between maybe we'll let him go a little bit farther and see what happens, or we're going to take him out now and eliminate any opportunity he has to hurt somebody, you're going to err on the side of, in favor of the innocent people," Police Chief Terry Rozema said. "Without a doubt."

The situation warranted deadly force because the suspect was headed to an area where several hundred people were working.

"This officer made a split-second decision, and in retrospect, when all the dust clears, I think we look at this and say, yeah, there's things we can learn from this," he said, "but the entire community is safe, all the officers are safe, and even the suspect in this case is safe."

Cohen-Metzger said officers didn't make any effort to de-escalate the situation of a man "clearly suicidal, clearly in crisis."

"I find it ludicrous to say that we're saving this man's life whose suicidal by almost killing him," she said.

Jonathan rejects amended constitution

President Goodluck Jonathan has rejected the amendments made to the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly.

A top government official who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent on Tuesday that Jonathan vetoed the amendment on Monday.

The official said the decision of the President not to sign the document was because the amendment did not meet the provisions of Section 9 (3) of the 1999 Constitution.

The source explained that with the return of the document by the President, the letter accompanying it might be read on the floors of the two chambers of the National Assembly any time from Wednesday (today).

He said, “The President has vetoed the constitution amendment and he has sent it back to the National Assembly.

“The amendment did not meet the provision of Section 9 (3) of the constitution which talks about the need for four fifth of the National Assembly to agree with the amendment.”

Section 9 (3) of the Constitution reads:

“An Act of the National Assembly for the purpose of altering the provisions of this section, section 8 or Chapter IV of this Constitution shall not be passed by either House of the National Assembly unless the proposal is approved by the votes of not less than four-fifths majority of all the members of each House, and also approved by resolution of the House of Assembly of not less than two-third of all states.”

The rejected amended constitution granted approval for the separation of the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation from that of Minister/Commissioner of Justice.

Buhari to move against pension for ex-governors

President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), is to lead a campaign to repeal the pension laws for governors enacted by many states of the federation, Vanguard has learnt.
The proposal by the incoming president is based on what sources close to him affirm as the incongruity of the laws under the country’s socio-economic environment and also, as a way of demonstrating moral leadership from the top.
Majority of the nation’s 36 state Houses of Assembly have enacted generous pension entitlements for governors that in many cases provide 100 per cent pay for the incumbent governors buildings, generous medical allowances for them and their family members and annual holiday provisions, all of which are to last for life. Provisions in the pension allowances are also made for staff, security and vehicles that are renewable every three or four years.
Buhari’s inclination towards a review of the pension for former governors was first publicly declared few days to the presidential election at the All Progressives Congress, APC, retreat in Owerri, Imo State.
It’s scandalous
A source conversant with the development disclosed that Buhari told the governors that there was no way Nigeria could survive under the financial weight of the pensions that had been earmarked for governors. He was said to have described the pension laws as enacted by states controlled by APC and PDP governors as scandalous.
According to the source, “he was very blunt about it and said that it was something that was going to be done immediately, especially because it is not something that can be sustained.
“The feeling was that not only was it wrong and morally unconscionable, but that it was not something that should be encouraged, and he was appealing to them that it should be changed.”
However, the response of the governors, who were present at the retreat, was not immediately given.
It’s a welcome proposal —Keyamo
The development was, yesterday, welcomed by leading Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo, who described it as a fantastic proposal but disclosed that it was something that could, however, only be accomplished through moral suasion.
“Fantastic, fantastic. It is a very welcome proposal,” the Lagos lawyer, who backed General Buhari against President Goodluck Jonathan in last month’s presidential election said.
He, however, said the proposal was something that Buhari could only effect through moral suasion as the pension acts were enacted by state Houses of Assembly.
The crave for financial safety out of office was recently also extended to the legislature after the Lagos State House of Assembly passed pension laws to guarantee generous pension entitlements with proposals for former presiding officers of the house.
States that have passed the law
Many states of the federation had steadily been passing the law since return to civil rule. States like Lagos, Edo, Gombe, Oyo, and Rivers have passed the law, through which several former governors are already drawing applicable benefits, which in some cases are 100 per cent of what the incumbent is earning, while in others, some benefits in the pension laws are as high as 300 per cent of what obtains in some states.
100% of basic salary in Lagos
The Lagos State Governor and Deputy Governor Pensions Law of 2007 provides that “a former governor and family (spouse and children both married and unmarried) are entitled to free medical treatment which is not capped. Another highlight is that the ex-governor is entitled to a cook, steward, gardener and other domestic staff who are pensionable.
The benefits:
Annual Basic Salary: 100% of annual basic salaries of the incumbent governor and deputy.
Accommodation: One residential house in Lagos and another in FCT for the former governor; one residential house in Lagos for the deputy.
Transport: Three cars, two backup cars and one pilot car for the ex-governor every three years; two cars, two backup cars and one pilot car for the deputy governor every three years.
Furniture: 300 per cent of the annual salary.

INEC shifts state assembly election in Katsina LG to April 18

Katsina – The INEC has postponed the House of Assembly election in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State to April 18.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Bagobiri, announced this at a news conference.
He said that some miscreants attacked INEC office in the area and prevented electoral officers from taking election materials to 10 out of the 11 wards in the area, thereby prompting the decision.
He said the election was only conducted in Dan-Ali ward which hasd11 polling units.
Bagobiri added that the hoodlums burnt election materials in one polling unit in the ward.
He said the hooliganism scared away voters in spite of efforts by security agents to maintain law and order in the area.
‘’INEC has no option other than to postpone the election to April 18,’’ he said.
Bagobiri assured that the commission would conduct free, fair and credible election in the area.
He also urged security agents and other relevant agencies to take measures that would ensure a hitch free exercise.(NAN)

The MTV Movie Awards' 11 Most Memorable Best Kiss Moments, Ranked

Fire up those VCRs, rewind your VHS tape and make sure you're not recording over anything important like the birth of a sibling because the 2015 MTV Movie Awards are this Sunday! And then get back in your TARDIS because you're using a VCR so that means you're probably back in the '90s, which means you're on another adventure with the Doctor.

One of the highlights of the MTV Movie Awards year in and year out is the Best Kiss category. It's always one of the most memorable moments of the evening, and this year we bet Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort take home the popcorn tub for The Fault in Our Stars. But will their acceptance speech join the ranks with these 11 legendary Best Kiss moments? Check out our favorites from the past 23(!) years, ranked for your pleasure:

11. Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman, Step Up 2 (2008)

This moment was equal parts cute and uncomfortable as these two, who were real-life lovers when they accepted the award, clearly were seconds away from ripping each other's clothes off and going at it right onstage. Someone hose 'em down!

10. Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly, Dumb and Dumber (1995)

We were expecting Jim to be silly about the whole thing, but because he would later go on to marry this woman, Carrey instead went the romantic route, calling her the sweetest woman on the globe and that he would "slay any dragon to win her favor."

9.  Will Ferrell and Sasha Baron Cohen, Talladega Nights (2007)

These guys had more chemistry during their makeout/acceptance speech than Joey and Rachel had on Friends when they were dating. Yeah, we said it.

8. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Twilight: New Moon (2010)

Robsten, may they rest in peace, won this category four years in a row at the MTV Movie Awards. This was the second time they won, and after Kristen pushed Rob's head away, the two finally gave the fans what they really wanted and kissed. And by "kissed," we mean they awkwardly bumped faces for a split second.

7. Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain (2006)

Jake accepted the award for their movie kiss on the guys' behalf, calling it at an "honor" and "a big deal" to be chosen as the winner. "Thank you, not just from me but from all those struggling with love, "he said. "Which is all of us." Fast forward to 1:00 to watch Jake's sweet speech.

6. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 (2012)

This was weeks before the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal would rock the entertainment world, so this could have been our last time seeing Robsten happily together at an award show. But Rob wasn't there, so it ended up just being Kristen, making out with herself. Get it, girl. You don't need a man to get some love!

5. Will Poulter, Emma Roberts and Jennifer Aniston, We're the Millers (2014)

His whole acceptance speech was a bit about how he dated both Jennifer Aniston and Emma Roberts at the same time, and it was amazing. Plus hotties Dave Franco and Zac Efron were both directly behind him so the whole scene was just magical.

4. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Twilight: Eclipse (2011)

Twilight fan-fiction writers everywhere crapped their pants watching Rob run out into the audience to lay a big one on Taylor Lautner. After winning the award for the third time, we're glad Robsten mixed it up.

3. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Twilight (2009)

The first time these two won was the best time because not only did Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock fangirl out while giving them the award, but they clearly had so much fun riling up the crowed with their little almost-kissing bit. Those li'l scamps.

2. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair, Cruel Intentions (2000)

This was the first time a same-sex duo won this award, and they could have just thanked the fans and left the stage, but they gave us what we wanted and smooched, setting a standard for all Best Kiss winners thereafter.

1. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, The Notebook (2005)

Everything You Need to Know About Game of Thrones' "Shocking" Season 5--With Scoop From the Cast!

It's been a long, cold winter as we've waited for the real winter to come...Game of Thrones' winter, that is! It's been one full year since we've journeyed to the land of Westeros for new episodes of HBO's hit fantasy drama and now, our wait is finally over, as season five premieres this Sunday.

This is the season we've all been waiting for, book enthusiasts and non-book readers alike, as the show has caught up to where George R. R. Martin's novels have stopped, and it's become a fact that this season is going to feature stories that haven't been in the books...yet. No one truly knows what's going to happen (besides Martin and the showrunners, of course), so for the first time since this show premiered, we're all in this together!

That's why E! News rounded up the cast at the Game of Thrones season five red carpet premiere in San Francisco to see what they could reveal about what's coming up this season.

The mastermind behind all of Game of Thrones, Martin, promises that there are going to be some major surprises for book readers...including the fates of some characters who everyone thinks are safe.

"Yes, there will be [surprises]," Martin tells E! News. "[Executive producers] David [Benioff] and Dan [D. B. Weiss] are bloodier than I am so no one is safe here. Even characters who are still alive in the books will die in the series. What can you do? Hold on to your seats and hope it's not your favorite character who winds up beheaded or disemboweled or poisoned."

Press play on the video below to see what Kit Harington revealed about Jon Snow's season five journey:

Benioff and Weiss can't wait for this season to premiere, because some characters will finally get to reunite.

"We've been looking forward to this season for a long time because for so long, the worlds of the show have been separate. There's the east and the west and they've never come together, and finally, this season, west meets east," Weiss says. "Without spoilers, the end of season four saw a couple of major characters sailing east. It's just so fun for us to write for these characters that we know and we love so well at this point when they start to encounter other characters that we know and we love so well that they haven't met before. That's one of the really exciting things to see for season five."

Because of the upcoming reunions and deviations from the books, Benioff is excited to see what viewers think of season five.

"It should be the most surprising season so far if we didn't screw it up, which is definitely possible," Benioff says with a laugh. "We'll find out in about two months!"

Press play on the video below to see what Emilia Clarke teased about what's coming up for Daenerys:

One of the biggest changes in season five is all thanks to Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), as he just murdered his father and escaped King's Landing with Varys (Conleth Hill).

"I killed our father, so that's definitely going to put a damper on things," Dinklage says of how his brother Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) feels about what he did. "He definitely didn't release me to do that, so that's a bit of a shocker, I'm sure."

And even though Tyrion made it out of King's Landing without getting caught, there will be major ramifications from Cersei (Lena Headey) for murdering their father.

"They want my head," Dinklage says. "I'm a wanted man. My strategy? Go far away and make new friends." (Certain dragon-motherin' new friends.)

Dinklage revealed he's happy that he got to work with new cast members this season, meaning Tyrion is about to meet some characters he's never been in scenes with before!

"It's incredible," Dinklage says. "I got to work with some new people this season that I've only met at these events and it's just lovely to share the screen with them at last."

Press play on the video below to see what Coster-Waldau had to say about Jaime's journey this season:

As for Tyrion's traveling partner Varys, Hill teased that the quiet schemer has big plans ahead of

Justin Bieber Is a Wanted Man: Argentine Judge Orders Singer's Arrest Over Assault Claims

This probably isn't the greatest news to kick off Justin Bieber's Coachella weekend.

The singer is currently a wanted man after an Argentine judge issued an order for his arrest the second he sets foot in the country.

Judge Alberto Julio Banos ordered the "immediate detention" of Bieber and bodyguards Hugo Alcides Hesny and Terrence Reche Smalls, stemming from the 21-year-old pop star failing to answer questions about an alleged assault at a Buenos Aires nightclub in 2013, according to reports.

While in the South American country for his Believe tour, the Canadian singer was accused of sending his bodyguard to attack paparazzo Diego Pesosa outside the venue. When Justin was summoned to answer questions about the incident, he didn't show.

Bieber's rep had no comment.

Under Argentine law, the celeb would face from one month to six years in prison if convicted on a charge of causing injuries.

It's currently unclear whether or not the arrest warrant extends beyond Argentina. However, in comments to local station Telefe Noticias, Pesoa's lawyer implied that it would force Bieber to return.

"Now we just need to wait for the police to find him and bring him" to Argentina, lawyer Matias Morla reportedly said. "For us, this is a triumph against all those who said this case was a bluff and that we didn't have anything."

INEC official takes two card readers away from polling unit

At Unit 023, Zone 9 at Baba-Ewe Junction, Ago-palace, under Oshodi/Isolo LCDA, two card readers failed. INEC officials arrived at the polling unit at 8.15a.m. but could not commence accreditation due to the faulty machines. One of the officials took the card readers away for repair but did not return as at 9.36a.m.
A human rights activist and election observer, Mrs Joe Okei-Odumakin, told journalists that she was satisfied with the early supply of election materials by INEC. Okei-Odumakin, the President of the Campaign for Democracy, said that she had visited 21 polling booths as at 10.30a.m.
Many enthusiastic voters turned out in large numbers in many polling centres in Lagos as early as 8.00a.m.for the governorship and House of Assembly polls on Saturday. Also INEC ad hoc staff and election materials arrived early at  many polling units contrary to what obtained  in the March 28 presidential and national assembly polls.
Security agents also reported early.   These made accreditation to begin early in many polling booths, with smart cards readers working better. In Epe, voters trooped out in large numbers as at 7.45a.m., waiting for electoral officers and materials.
They queued up in some polling units while waiting for the officers and materials. Some of the polling centres visited are Ward A3, Units 2,5, 8 and 12 and Ward A2, Units 7, 10 and 11. Ambode hailed Epe residents for the impressive turnout. The governorship candidate, who was in company of his wife, Abolanle, also commended INEC for efforts toward hitch-free polls. He urged voters to be calm and vigilant. Alhaji Idris Haruna, Leader of the Hausa Community, told newsmen at the unit, “l have instructed members of the Hausa Community to come out en masse for accreditation and voting.
“We thank Allah for giving us peaceful presidential and National Assembly elections. We hope that these ones will also be peaceful.’’ At Ward 3, Unit 9 in Apapa Local Government Area, the PDP Governorship Candidate, Mr Jimi Agabaje,  was accredited at 10.30a.m.
He commended INEC for early arrival of electoral officers and election materials. Agbaje expressed satisfaction at voters’ turnout. He appealed to voters to shun violence. However, as at 9.05a.m, INEC officials and materials had yet to arrive at Polling Units located at the Grammar School, Ota Ona, Ireshe,  Oriwu Road, all in Ikorodu.
There was orderliness at the polling units as voters were taking numbers and forming queues, waiting for the arrival of electoral officers and materials.  Many polling units in Badagry Local Government Area of the state started accreditation of voters at 8.00a.m. as smart cards readers and other election materials arrived at about 7.45a.m.

Navy dislodges miscreants from Warri waterways

WARRI- THE Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS, Warri, Delta State, Captain Musa Gemu, said he deployed naval personnel to chase away the troublemakers, who commandeered a section of the Warri waterways, near the disbanded Camp 5 in Warri South-West Local Government Area, Saturday,  harassing travellers.
He said it was in reaction to the lawlessness by the boys that he dispatched his men, saying, “There is calm now, we have driven them away.”
His words,  “Some youths were beaten up people before Camp 5, the reason for their action is not known, we had to dispatch men to ensure that there is peace in the area.”
Captain Gemu, however, said that movement on the waterways was restricted till the period of free movement as ordered by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, asking residents and voters to remain in their respective wards because the same restriction that apply on land also apply in the riverine area.
Former PDP chieftain in Warri, Chief Ayirimi Emami, who defected to APC, few days ago, raised the alarm, this morning, that his step mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Emami, was detained for hours by Ijaw boys at Kurutie, who also harassed and beat up other innocent travelers, yesterday.
But, PDP chairman in Warri South West local government area, Chief Boro Opudu, who acknowledged that Emami spoke to him about his step mother, dismissed the allegation of tension on the waterways, saying there was calm from information available to him.

Twenty-two persons were killed on Thursday when Boko Haram insurgents attacked two villages in Borno State.

In Dile, a village in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of the state, a member of the youth vigilante group said 20 people were killed while many were injured when the Boko Haram fighters invaded the village around 2am.

The source said, “Hundreds of suspected Boko Haram militants, who are believed to be fleeing from the Nigerian troops on Thursday, killed at least 20 people in an attack on a remote village in Askira Uba Local Government Area in Borno State.”

“The insurgents stormed Dile village at 2am in several vehicles, burning houses and killing anybody in sight.”

Girl, 15, two others injured in Lagos-Ibadan road crash

A 15-year-old girl and two others were critically injured on Friday in an auto crash at the popular Arepo Bus Stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway area of Ogun State.

Commercial motorcyclists and other sympathisers rushed the injured victims to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

An eyewitness said the accident, which involved a Toyota Sienna car marked APP 947 CQ and a truck marked YN 163 XA, occurred as both vehicles were struggling to overtake each other.

Another eyewitness, Olamilekan Akande, 40, explained that the accident occurred as the truck’s driver was trying to avoid hitting a stationary bus and thereby swerved to the direction of the Toyota car.

“The accident happened in my presence. I saw how it happened and I am ready to testify anywhere on how it occurred. It was the back of the truck that hooked up the front part of the Toyota car and dragged it on the road while the driver was overtaking it,” Akande said.

But both drivers blamed the crash on each other.

The 35-year-old driver of the Toyota car, who simply identified himself as Obina Uraka, accused the driver of the articulated vehicle, Mr. Mosudi Adigun, 50, of wrongful overtaking, while the latter said Uraka hit his vehicle from the rear, leading to the fatal destruction of the car.

Our correspondent noted that two of the victims were in critical condition when he visited the hospital, but the Medical Director, Dr. Abiola Ajayi, assured them of adequate treatment.

The 15-year-old victim, Cocy Onyemechi, whose right leg was affected, said she was fast asleep when the crash occurred, adding that it was the dragging of the car by the truck that woke her up.

When contacted for comment, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said he was not aware of the crash, but promised to get back to our correspondent after investigating the incident.

As of the time of filing this report, however, the police spokesperson had yet to comment on the crash.

PDP expels Lamido’s deputy, Mahmud heads for APC

The Deputy Governor of Jigawa, Alhaji Ahmad Mahmud, has been expelled from the Peoples Democratic Party for alleged anti-party activities.

This was contained in a statement by the PDP chairman of Galagamma ward in Gumel, Jigawa, Alhaji Ibrahim Kafinta, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria  on Monday in Dutse.

The chairman said the decision to expel Mahmud was taken during a stakeholders meeting held in his ward.

Reports had earlier indicated that Mahmud had dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress, which won the March 28 election in the state.

Kafinta did not say when the stakeholders meeting, which ratified the expulsion, held.

The ward chairman alleged that the deputy governor “sabotaged PDP” during the recent National Assembly election.

He added that the Gumel Local Government Area headquarters of the party, had endorsed the expulsion.

Efforts by NAN to get the comments of the deputy governor on the matter was futile as he neither picked a call nor replied a text message sent to him.

Why Jonathan lost to Buhari – Sanusi

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the current Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, says President Goodluck Jonathan lost because of the mood of voters which was determined by the economic conditions and level of poverty across the country.

Sanusi, who is now known as Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, said this during an interview with our correspondent on Saturday.

He said the voting showed that areas which had a high rate of poverty felt neglected by the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government over the years.

Sanusi said the presidential poll results showed that the figures of the PDP in presidential elections from 1999 had continued to dwindle significantly.

The monarch said the PDP got fewer votes in 2007, less in 2011 and then fewer votes in 2015 causing the ruling party to finally lose to the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress.

He said, “I think in 2011, it was very clear that Jonathan had lost many states in the North that had previously been won by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. And it was clear that there was a general sense by people of the Federal Government not investing in the areas where there is a high level of poverty.

“I believe more and more of those states began to feel that sense of not feeling the federal presence and not feeling the impact of democracy in their pockets and I think it is extremely important for people to connect with the government and when you have such conditions after 16 years of democracy, it was natural that people would want to have a change and I think this is basically what has happened.

“I don’t think it is something about an individual, I think it is something that has been going on for a number of years and you could see the states won by the PDP in 1999 and what they won in 2003, what they won in 2007, 2011 and you would begin to see the changes in the way Nigerians were responding so it was a matter of time.”

Sanusi, however, commended Jonathan, the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari; and the Independent National Electoral Commission for the conduct and atmosphere of the election.

He said change of leadership was good for democracy as it encouraged healthy competition. He said it was the trend in democracies across the world.

“I think it is good for the country that you have different parties winning and if the APC performs, they get another term and if they don’t, they get voted out after four years and it is extremely important that this happens so let us not see it in terms of somebody losing,” he said.

Sanusi also urged Buhari not to focus solely on corruption but on other areas that required urgent government attention such as education, decaying infrastructure, diversifying the economy and fixing power.

No peace for Iraqi Christians this Easter

Story highlights
Rarely since the first century have Christians faced persecution on this scale, say Dolan, Downey and Burnett.
Crisis escalated substantially as ISIS has swept through Iraq's Nineveh province, the authors write.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan is the archbishop of New York, Roma Downey and Mark Burnett are honorary chairpersons of The Cradle Fund and the producers of " A.D. -- The Bible Continues," which chronicles the rise of the church in the face of persecution. The views expressed in this column belong to Dolan, Downey and Burnett.

This is the time of the year when Christians the world over -- more than 2 billion of us -- reflect upon the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord.

The world's fastest-growing religion is ...

Story highlights
Islam, the world's fastest-growing faith, will leap from 1.6 billion to 2.76 billion by 2050, according to the Pew study
Study collected data from 234 countries and territories; predicts fate of five major faiths -- Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam -- as well as folk religions and atheists
If tech futurists are to be believed, by the year 2050, robots will do many of our errands and drive our cars. If a new study on religious trends is to be believed, many of those robot-controlled cars will stop and park at mosques and churches.

Yes, despite predictions that religion will go the way of dinosaurs, the size of almost every major faith -- sorry, Buddhists -- will increase in the next 40 years, according to a study released Thursday by the Pew Research Center.

The biggest winners, Pew predicts, will be Islam and Christianity.

Islam, the world's fastest-growing faith, will leap from 1.6 billion (in 2010) to 2.76 billion by 2050, according to the Pew study. At that time, Muslims will make up nearly one-third of the world's total projected population of about 9 billion people.

Christianity is expected to grow, too, but not at Islam's explosive rate. The Pew study predicts Christians will increase from 2.17 billion to 2.92 billion, composing more than 31% of the world's population.

This means that by 2050, more than 6 out of 10 people on Earth will be Christian or Muslim. And, for perhaps the first time in history, Islam and Christianity would boast roughly equal numbers.

Looking even farther into the future, Islam's population could pass Christianity by 2070, Pew says, despite Christians' six-century head start. (It's possible that Muslims outnumbered Christians some time in the past, perhaps during the Black Plague that decimated Europe. But scholars aren't certain.)

Based in Washington, Pew is a nonpartisan "fact tank" that regularly produces sweeping surveys of this kind without taking public policy positions. Six years in the making, its study collected data from 234 countries and territories to predict the fate of five major faiths -- Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam -- as well as folk religions and the religiously unaffiliated, including atheists.

The study, which Pew says is the first of its kind, bases its projections on the age of populations, fertility and mortality rates, as well as migration and conversion patterns. Simply put, Muslims are having larger families, retaining more members (conversions are illegal in some Muslim nations) and are younger than adherents of other faiths. More than 1 in 3 Muslims is younger than 15. But religious trends have never been measured on the study's vast scale, Pew says, so a few cautions are in order.

First, the population projections are based on current data and assumptions about demographic trends. For example, Muslim women have an average of three children, the highest of any religious group. In the future, if education and employment rates rise, those numbers could change.

Second, nobody at Pew has a crystal ball, so events like cataclysmic wars, rampaging diseases, natural disasters and economic meltdowns could throw the numbers off.

But it's clear from the 245-page report that Pew and the demographic experts they consulted did their homework, so the study is worth taking seriously. With that in mind, he

ISIL re-enters refugee camp in Syria

Palestinian officials and activists say fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant battling armed groups inside a refugee camp in the Syrian capital, Damascus, have taken control of most of the camp.

Members of the ISIL stormed the Yarmouk camp on Wednesday but were expelled on Thursday before re-entering the camp on Friday.

Palestinian official Khaled Abdul-Majid said the group was in control of half of the camp. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the Syrian conflict through a network of activists, also reported new advances by the group in the camp, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Abdul-Majid and another official, Anwar Raja, said ISIL members were fighting a Palestinian faction called Aknaf Bait al-Maqdis. Activists said Bait al-Maqdis was now besieged by ISIL and confined to a few streets.

Residents of Yarmouk said the ISIL advance followed the arrest of group members accused of assassinating a leading figure of Bait al Maqdis.

Palestinian factions and Syrian armed groups are among groups fighting for the control of the camp. Others include the Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham and Free Syrian Army brigades.

Yarmouk was once a thriving area home to 160,000 Palestinian refugees and Syrians but has been caught up in the country’s fighting and besieged by regime forces for more than a year.

About 18,000 residents are estimated to in the camp after many fled the fighting. The siege has caused significant shortages of food, water and medicine inside the camp.

ISIL’s rapid advance across Syrian and Iraqi territory has stagnated since an American-led coalition began an air campaign to stop the group’s.

China’s ex-security chief arrested for corruption

China’s former security chief Zhou Yongkang has been charged with bribery, abuse of power and disclosing state secrets, making him the most senior official being prosecuted in decades.
Zhou is the most prominent victim of President Xi Jinping’s much-publicised anti-corruption drive, which has targeted high-level “tigers” as well as low-level “flies”.
“The defendant Zhou Yongkang… took advantage of his posts to seek gains for others and illegally took huge property and assets from others, abused his power, causing huge losses to public property and the interests of the State and the people,” said the indictment, posted online by prosecutors.
“The social impact is vile and the circumstances were extraordinarily severe,” it said, adding that he also “intentionally leaked state secrets”.
The document was filed with a court in the northern port of Tianjin, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate added.
He had a background in the oil industry and accumulated vast power as he rose through the ranks to become a member of the Communist Party’s elite Politburo Standing Committee, the most powerful body in China.
