Obama holds security talks with Arab leaders

President Barack Obama has opened a summit in the US with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab allies, seeking to convince them of US commitment to their security despite deep concern among Arab leaders about US efforts to broker a nuclear deal with Iran.

Hosting the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for a rare summit on Thursday at the Camp David presidential retreat, Obama faced the challenge of allaying their fears of US disengagement at a time of Middle East upheaval while also pressing the Gulf states to work together in their own defence.

The GCC is comprised of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

In a media briefing, Ben Rhodes, US deputy national security adviser for strategic communication, said the leaders discussed the threat to the GCC from Iran, as well as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, besides ongoing regional conflicts in the region, including Syria, Yemen and Libya.

“The president and his team were able to provide an update on the status of the nuclear negotiations … and also Iran’s destabilising actions in the region, which touch upon the security of our GCC partners,” Rhodes said.

He said the US had set out a range of strategies to help the GCC countries deal with Iran.

“We’re looking at what we can do to expedite the provision of support and capacity-building to the GCC in relation to ballistic missiles, maritime security, special operations, counterterrorism and border security,” Rhodes said.

He said Obama had assured the GCC states that the nuclear agreement reached in Lausanne, Swizerland, was limited to Iran’s nuclear programme only and not other issues.

Gulf Arab frustration

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud pulled out early, sending Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in his place.

The decision was widely interpreted as a snub that reflected the GCC’s frustration with the Obama administration.

The White House has said such decisions were not intended as slights and has portrayed the summit as more than just a symbolic event.

But US officials have also played down the prospects for any major breakthroughs.

White House officials have said there would no formal defence treaty, as some GCC leaders sought, and that the summit is likely to produce more modest announcements on integrating ballistic-missile defence systems, easing weapons deliveries and increasing joint military exercises.

In an interview to Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane on Wednesday, Rhodes said the US was committed to the defence of the GCC countries but a formal treaty would not happen in the near future.

“A treaty is not what we’re looking for. It took decades to build NATO and the Asian allies but we can provide clear assurances that we will come to their defence,” he said, alluding to a prospective alliance with the GCC members.

Sunni Arab leaders are concerned that lifting Western sanctions as part of a nuclear deal with Shia Iran would empower Iran to act in further destabilising the region, especially in volatile countries such as Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

The Obama administration would like GCC support, or at least a toning-down of any criticism, for the deal to help convince a sceptical US Congress it has broad backing in the region.

Adding weight to Arab concerns, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy fired warning shots over a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel in international waters in the Gulf on Thursday.
The shots prompted the vessel to flee into the UAE’s territorial waters, according to US officials.
Rhodes said the incident highlighted “exactly” why Gulf Arab states were concerned about Iran’s behaviour.

37 People Who Think Canceling American Idol Is the Best Decision Anyone Has Ever Made in the History of Time

"What's wrong with American Idol, Mommy? Where are you taking him?"

"Well, Timmy. Sometimes, the things you love get old. And they aren't the way you remember them. They can't run and jump and play or deliver memorable winners anymore. Remember the days of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Adam Lambert?"

"Boy, do I!"

"Of course you do, son! But those days are long gone now. Idol is sick, and he needs to go to a better place. The great big television studio in the sky, where he can run around with his old buddies like Joe Millionaire and Temptation Island. Don't be sad. It's better this way."

Yeah, we just likened Fox canceling American Idol to a mother telling her son that they have to put the family pet down but, it's kind of the same thing. Except with pets, everyone is really sad and it's a hard experience for everyone, and with Idol, no one is sad because it really should have happened a long time ago. In fact, people are mostly celebrating the end of the reality competition show. Us? We're just really concerned about Ryan Seacrest. How will he manage to pay his bills without his Idol hosting gig?! Oh, he's got nine other jobs. Right.

Anyway, like we said, Twitter is not in mourning. They are in the opposite of mourning. They are in un-mourning. Everyone is treating Idol's cancelation like it's the best decision anyone has ever made in the history of anything ever. Or at least the best thing since chocolate and peanut butter decided to get together:

And then there are those who thought that American Idol was canceled years ago, so the fact that the show was a trending topic was very confusing to them:

Psst...no one tell them that Big Brother and Deal or No Deal are both still on the air.

But let's get real for a moment here. We all know why American Idol got canned. It's because the other host from season one, Brian Dunkleman (remember him?) left the show after the first year. It took 15 years, but eventually his departure took its toll, and now Fox is paying the price. Brian himself knows what's up:

Damn you, DUNKLEMANNNN!

Let's hope the once great American Idol goes out with a bang and not with a combined sad trombone-fart noise.

The Originals Season 2 Finale Scoop: Is Klaus Past Redemption?

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) may have gone too far this time, and it's not something "always and forever" can fix.

Though it was revealed during the penultimate episode of The Originals season two that the Original hybrid wasn't actually working with Dahlia (Claudia Black) and giving her baby Hope, and it was actually all a ruse to find a way to defeat Dahlia once and for all, he ended up killing Elijah's (Daniel Gillies) girlfriend Gia (Nishi Munshi) right in front of Elijah's eyes. It was brutal. It was cruel. And it was totally avoidable.

"Klaus is going to make a very strong case that 'I had to do what I had to do to protect our family,'" executive producer Julie Plec tells E! News. "But Elijah's going to make a very strong case of, 'You didn't have to do it the way you did it.' I don't see those brothers coming to terms or any kind of agreement about Klaus' methods anytime soon. That's going to be one of Klaus' big problems, is he believes everything he did was justified but he has to admit that there was a bit of pettiness attached to it too. He was so betrayed that his family didn't stand by him when he asked them too, when he said, 'Trust me,' and they didn't believe his concerns about Freya [Riley Voelkel]."

She continues, "Now, it turns out he was wrong about Freya but he was also right about her because when all is said and done, Freya's singular goal was to free herself from Dahlia and she would have gone to great lengths to do so. Klaus is Klaus. Elijah is tormented by his codependency to his brother and we'll see how he chooses to handle this latest round of abuse at the hand of his brother. I'm rooting for him to hold strong and stay pissed for a while."

Series star Daniel Gillies agrees with Plec, adding that if he could choose, he'd make sure Elijah didn't forgive his brother for a very long time.

"One would hope not," Gillies tells E! News. "But if the past is any indication of the way they'll behave in the future, then all will probably be forgotten in a week. I appreciate you bringing that up, because people seem to forget about that great atrocity. Everyone seems to be focusing on what Eljiah will do now that Hayley's [Phoebe Tonkin] been turned into a wolf. But he did just watch his girlfriend go up in flames!"

Gillies reveals that Gia's murder is going to be the most important thing to Elijah right now.

"He's got more to be concerned about right now than Hayley, even though of course he's going to do whatever he can to remove the curse from Hayley," Gillies says. "That's a given. We know he's devoted to her and loves her. But I don't know how Klaus and Elijah are going to proceed and the terrifying thing is they have to work together in terms of defeating Dahlia. They have to get over, at least in the short term, the atrocities Klaus has committed in the name of winning the war."

But rest assured, Elijah will not be handling Gia's death well in the finale.

"For the next episode at least, there's a degree of fallout and certainly anguish and a desire to force Niklaus to reconcile himself with what he did in the name of what he needed to do," Gillies says. "They both have an enormous mountain to climb, and how will that affect them in season three? Who knows. In a perfect world, this would be etched in stone for Elijah for the better part of next season. This would be the unforgivable act of treachery and betrayal, if it were up to me."

In fact, the biggest point of contention is the fact that if Klaus were really committed to fooling Dahlia into thinking he was truly on her side, he would have killed Cami (Leah Pipes) as well as Gia, instead of faking Cami's death.

"That's just how Klaus functions!" Gillies says with a laugh. "You want to commit to the ruse, but if you're really committing, you have to kill Cami in this moment. And yet he doesn't. It really speaks to the fact that he does what he wants. But the only mildly redemptive part of the whole situation is that he didn't kill Cami."

Privatisation of PHCN a fraud, electricity workers tell Buhari

In apparent response to the statement made by the out-going minister of power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, on the need for the in-coming administration not to tamper with the   privatization of the power sector, electricity workers in the country have demanded a thorough review of the privatization of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, alle-ging that the privatization   project  was fraught with irregularities.
The workers further alleged that the privatisation exercise had made electricity generation and consumption in the country ineffective.
The workers, under the aegis of National Union of Electricity Emplo-yees, NUEE, insisted that the payment   of over N200   billion to the private sector by the government after the privatization   exercise leaves much to be desired, and urged the incoming administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, rtd, to revisit the   exercise.
The executive members of the union, led by the General Secretary and factional President of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said   this in Abuja, while conducting select journalists round the site of abandoned 60 containers of 52KVA electricity transformers, at Kubwa, in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the NUEE executive members, Ajaero argued that if after many months, privatization of electricity in the country had failed to bring positive impact to electricity consumers, then, there  was the need for the Buhari-led presidency  to revisit the programme.
Comrade Ajaero said: “We want to say, as a union that the sham called privatization should be revisited. If privatization, as we were told, was to  bring us heaven-on-earth elderado, and it has not done that, why should we insist on it?.
“Of course, our position as NUEE, has been no to privatization, especially given that we are an underdeveloped economy. It is the function of the state to provide power.
“Even the   so called privatization, you   can see   that even   this   year   alone, between January   and now, they have even given the so   called private   sector over N200   billion. So, why fund them if you say the electricity is in the hands of the private sector? That brings you to the point of the fraud on who owns them.
“Why would you sell your house to  somebody and you still give him money to maintain it? So, it’s a fraud.”
Emphasizing on the minister’s comment that privatization of PHCN must stay, Ajaero added: “We want Buhari to ask questions first  and foremost because it   is wrong for   a   an out-going minister to be setting agenda   for Buhari to reverse or not to reverse the privatization of PHCN.
“A minister who inherited about 4000 megawatts and is today, battling with just 2000 and something megawatts, doesn’t have   the moral   courage to advise incoming government   on what   to   do.
Ajaero stressed: “If he Buhari asks questions for some months, he will now know the direction to move.”
On the abandoned containers, Ajaero said he was alerted on the abandoned equipments by concerned citizens who got wind of the development.
“With these transformers hidden here,  you can now understand that while they were privatizing, certain properties were being hidden, “he alleged.

Congrats to Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson!

The 24-year-old WNBA stars wed on Friday at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix. Johnston posted a wedding photo of herself and her partner on Saturday on her Instagram page.

She wore a strapless champagne wedding gown with crystal detailing, a sweetheart neckline and long train, paired with what appeared to be a cathedral-length veil, crystal headband and large necklace while Griner sported a tan suit, light button-down dress shirt and white tennis shoes.

The bride had picked out her dress at Bridals by Lori's in Atlanta, as seen on an episode of TLC's Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta.

The wedding took place on Friday in front of some 75 guests and the newlyweds' first dance was Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud," People magazine reported.

Griner proposed to Johnson in August 2014 (see a pic of the engagement ring!)

The wedding comes two weeks after both women were arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct after police responded to a domestic dispute at their new home outside of Phoenix. The two suffered minor injuries. The WNBA launched an investigation.

Griner pleaded pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct under a plea deal and is set to attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling and upon completion all charges will be dismissed, USA Today reported on April 28, adding that she voluntarily began counseling the day after her arrest and is cooperating with the WNBA's investigation.

"It is never OK for an argument to turn physical," the newspaper quoted Griner as saying in a statement released through her attorney. "This will never happen again, and I take my relationship and my responsibility as a role model seriously. I am committed to making positive changes and I plan to use what I have learned to set a good example and help make a difference in the world around me."

Four Nigerian won Posts in the UK general election

In one of the most keenly contested general elections in British history, four Nigerians won seats to the revered parliament, making it the first time such feat would be recorded

Against all odds, David Cameron has won his re-election bid in one of the fiercest polls in British history.

Cameron, Prime Minister of Britain, led the Conservatives to almost a landslide victory against the Labour Party – a development that forced arch-rival – Ed Miliband to step down as head of the opposition.

With the victory, Cameron returns to the iconic Number 10 Downing Street, the official residence of British Prime Ministers to continue with his work of massive reforms and making Britain greater.

But it is not only Cameron that has been left smiling following the announcement of winners – four politicians of Nigerian descent also tasted victory during the general elections in the Queen’s land.

Before Thursday’s keenly contested polls in Britain, not many within and outside it were familiar with Chuka Umunna, Helen Grant, Chi Onwurah and Kate Osamor. But by mid-day Friday, the four have almost become celebrities of sort after an elaborate media focus on them.

The four Nigerians won seats into the British parliament, making it the first time such would be happening in the highly conservative United Kingdom. While Umunna, a Labour Party politician who has served Streatham as Member of Parliament since 2010 and has enjoyed a meteoric political rise in recent years is a relatively known face outside Britain, the profile of the other three was largely unknown until Friday, a day after the keenly contested elections, even though Grant and Onwurah had been Members of Parliament over the last five years.

Umunna

Born on October 17, 1978 to a Nigerian father – Bennett and British mother – Patricia, Umunna began his education at Hitherfield Primary School in Streatham, South London, and the Christ Church Primary School in Brixton Hill. He later moved to St. Dunstan’s College, Catford, Southeast London where he played the cello and became a respected prefect in the school.

Pursuing higher education, the eloquent Umunna bagged an upper second class in English and French Law from the University of Manchester before going to study for one term at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France. He would later pick up an MA at the Nottingham Law School.

Umunna did not just get to the top all of a sudden – he slowly but vigorously climbed his way to the centerpiece of British politics. In 2002, after graduating from the university, the 37-year-old began working as a solicitor for Herbert Smith, a law firm based in the heart of London. Four years later he joined Rochman Landau, specialising in Employment Law.

However, he soon began writing and providing commentary on the Labour Party, as well as broader social and economic issues, usually in his capacity as a member of the Management Committee of the Labour-aligned Compass pressure group. He also wrote articles for the Financial Times, Tribune, The Voice, The Guardian and the New Statesman, and began to appear on various radio and television programmes as a commentator. Umunna would later go on to establish and edited an online political magazine, The Multicultural Politic.

In early April 2013, his law firm was linked to favourable updates made on his Wikipedia page in 2007, which included a reference to him being tipped as the “British Barack Obama”. Earlier in June 2010, he was elected a member of the Treasury Select Committee while in October of that year, he was appointed to serve as a Parliamentary Private Secretary and, in May 2011 rose to the position of Shadow Minister for Small Business and Enterprise until his promotion to the Shadow Cabinet.

Grant

Grant, born on September 28, 1961, is a Conservative Party politician and solicitor who was first elected into the British parliament in 2010. By that feat, she became the first black woman to be selected to defend a Tory seat and the Conservativ
