U.S. strike in Somalia targets Al-Shabaab

  •  The United States conducted an airstrike Monday in Somalia against Al-Shabaab, said Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, Pentagon press secretary.
The strike, which took place in the area of Saakow, was targeting a senior leader of the Islamist militant group.
"At this time, we do not assess there to be any civilian or bystander casualties. We are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information, when appropriate, as details become available," Kirby said in a statement.

  • The strike was carried out by an unmanned aircraft, and was an operation of the U.S. Defense Department, according to a U.S. defense official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
On Saturday, Somalia government forces captured a top Al-Shabaab commander, said two of the country's military officials.
Zakariya Ismail Ahmed Hersi, Al-Shabaab's intelligence chief, was captured in a house near the town of El Wak, Somali military commander Isack Hussein Mursal told state-run radio.
He was a close associate of former Al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike near Barawe city in September.
The capture came after militants with the group, which is linked to al Qaeda, attacked a large African Union base in Mogadishu last week, killing three Ugandan soldiers and a civilian.
Al-Shabaab has said that attack was revenge for the U.S. airstrike that killed Godane. The State Department had offered a $7 million reward for information on Godane's location.

The Interview makes $15m in online release

Controversial Sony film The Interview has become the number one online movie ever released by the studio just four days after its release on 24 December.
The film raked in over $15m (£9.6m) and was downloaded more than two million times as of 27 December.
The film, about a fictional American plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was initially halted from being released by the studio.
It angered North Korea and was behind a wide scale cyber attack on the studio.
The hack from a group calling itself the Guardians of Peace led to the leaking of confidential information including upcoming movie scripts, confidential emails and actors' salaries.
Sony halted the release after unspecified threats of attacks against cinemas.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) later said its investigation into the hacking attack pointed the finger at North Korea. The country denied involvement, but described the hack as a "righteous deed".
Sony said in a statement on Sunday that the movie was made available in the US and Canada through Google services YouTube and Play, Microsoft's Xbox Video and its dedicated website in HD versions for 48-hour rental at $5.99 and for purchase at $14.99.
There was also a "strong turnout" for the movie's limited theatre release, after major US chains backed out of screening it.
Sony's move to cancel the film's release had garnered criticism in the US including from President Barack Obama, who said it meant freedom of expression was under threat.

Alicia Keys Gives Birth: Singer and Husband Swizz Beatz Welcome Second Child Together!

Alicia Keys is a mama on fire!

Just days after celebrating the holidays with her family, the "Girl on Fire" and "Fallin" singer welcomed her second child, another boy, with husband Swizz Beatz. Their baby was born early on Saturday. His name: Genesis Ali Dean.

"The joy of joy is joy!! It's a boy!!" Key said on Instagram on Sunday. "We are so grateful!!#blessings!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️"

The Hollywood couple is already proud parents to their four-year-old son, Egypt, who was "so ready" to be a big brother long ago.

"He's not going to be the baby anymore," Keys told E! News while supporting Keep a Child Alive. "He's already preparing. He has like a little doll where he's like, 'Am I supposed to be doing this? Am I supposed to be doing that?' He's so ready. It's a blessing."

This is the second child for Keys, while her husband has three kids from past relationships.

While we're impressed with Egypt's attitude, we also can't help but applaud Keys' openness at sharing her growing belly throughout her pregnancy.

When she wasn't rocking a bump on the red carpet or onstage at concert venues, the "No One" crooner made time to pose completely nude for a cause near and dear to her heart.

"It's you and me on a mission to create a kinder and more peaceful world," Keys wrote on Instagram while revealing her bump in a sexy nude pic. "The #WeAreHere Movement begins today. Read more here and thank you @nickkristof for sharing your bright voice with all of us."

And then there's the memorable pic of Uncle Bono (yes, the lead singer from U2) who kissed Keys' belly days before giving birth.

"Baby love from Uncle B," she captioned while glowing in a fitted silver dress. "Maybe the baby will be our Christmas gift... we'll let u know."

So maybe the precious baby didn't come before Christmas. It's safe to say, however, that it was well worth the wait! Congrats to the happy family!

Chris Rock Files for Divorce From Wife Malaak Compton-Rock, Couple Has "Been Living Separate Lives"

Chris Rock and his wife Malaak Compton-Rock are ending their marriage, amicably.

The two are parents to two daughters, ages 12 and 10. News about their split was confirmed on Sunday, three days after Christmas.

"Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak," the actor's rep told E! News. "This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family."

"After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways," Compton-Rock, 45, said in a statement to People magazine. "Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life's blessings, even when faced with difficulties."

"While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority," she added. "It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives."

Rock, 49, who stars in the recently-released comedy film Top Five, which he also directed and wrote, met his wife in 1993. She is the founder and executive director of the non-profit organization styleWORKS, which helps women make a successful transition from welfare to the workforce.

The Emmy-winning actor and comedian and his wife had wed in 1996 at the posh Oxon Hill Manor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Two years later, the New York Daily News reported their marriage was on the rocks. The pair denied the report.

A source told E! News on Sunday that the couple has been "having marriage issues for years" and that they have "been living separate lives for some time."

"They care deeply for their kids' well-being and they wanted to wait to make any announcement," the source added. "They feel this is the best decision for their kids and each other."

When his wife was pregnant with their first child, Rock talked about his relationship with Compton-Rock in an interview with Oprah Winfrey for O magazine

"Our child is such a 9/11 baby," he said. "I said to myself, 'The world's falling down, and what have I done with my life?' We've been married five years, but we've never planned anything--it has always been about today. After September 11, I said, 'It's time. Let's have a baby.'"

He said at the time he enjoyed being married. When asked if marriage was difficult for him in the beginning, he said, "Yes. It's hard working in the benevolent dictatorship of show business and then coming home to a democracy."

"I wouldn't say rocky--it was just life," he added. "I had a lot going on back then, and I couldn't trust many people around me. I met so many people after I got rich and famous, and I learned that you can't ultimately trust people unless they were your friends when you were broke."

Missing plane likely at 'bottom of the sea'

The missing AirAsia jet probably crashed into the sea, Indonesia's top rescue official said Monday, citing radar data from the plane's last contact.

"Our early conjecture is that the plane is in the bottom of the sea," Bambang Sulistyo, head of Indonesia's national search and rescue agency, told reporters, saying the view was based on the plane's flight track and last known coordinates.

But searchers still don't know exactly where the aircraft is, he said, and may need help from other countries for an underwater search.

The search for AirAsia Flight QZ8501 resumed on Monday, a day after the commercial jet disappeared in Indonesian airspace with 162 people aboard.

Ships, planes and helicopters are looking for the missing aircraft, according to Indonesian authorities, who are leading the search and rescue operations.

It's unclear if weather played a role in the aircraft's disappearance, but rescuers say it could be a factor that influences how quickly they find the plane.

Large waves and clouds hampered the search for the plane on Sunday, the agency said. By Monday morning, weather in the area appeared to be clearing up, CNN International meteorologist Tom Sater said.

Authorities say they're combing a "very broad search area."

Flight diverted over boiling water incident

Earlier this month, "nut rage" prompted the pilot of a Korean Air flight on the tarmac of New York's JFK airport to turn back to the gate.
Now, "hot watergate" has forced a China-bound Thai AirAsia flight to return to Bangkok, angering not just the passengers on board but also the Chinese government and public.
Shortly after flight FD9101 took off last Thursday evening from Bangkok for the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, a male passenger asked a flight attendant for boiling water for his girlfriend's instant noodles, witnesses told China's state media.
When told they had to wait for the plane to reach cruising altitude, the young man reportedly dumped food on the aisle, stomped on it and yelled at other passengers who tried to calm him down.
He was allegedly still fuming as a flight attendant of the budget airline brought a cup of hot water and charged him 60 Thai baht ($2) for it.
Another argument ensued when he demanded Chinese currency for change as well as an official receipt, state media reported.
As the quarrel dragged on, the man's girlfriend threw hot water on the back of a flight attendant, witnesses said. When the purser demanded the woman apologize, the boyfriend exploded.
In a cell phone video taken by a fellow passenger and posted online, a man in a gray T-shirt and jeans can be heard shouting in Mandarin: "You don't think I have money? ...You caused all the problems and I'm going to blow up the plane!"
When the couple realized the flight was being turned back, the woman reportedly grew hysterical, hitting windows and threatening to jump off the plane, according to state media.
The plane -- carrying 174 passengers and six crew members -- hadn't even left Thai airspace before it turned around.

China's new rules for singing national anthem

China's 1.3 billion citizens may soon find it much harder to belt out their national anthem at will.
A series of rules proposed by the government will set strict limits on when, where and how "March of the Volunteers" -- the anthem of the People's Republic since 1949 -- can be performed, state-run Xinhua news agency reported Friday.
The anthem is not allowed to be played or sung at private weddings and funerals, dancing parties, commercial events, or any other setting with "an inappropriate atmosphere."
When singing the anthem, people should dress appropriately, stand still and be full of energy, according to the government.
Follow the rhythm
The rules then get technical: People must sing the powerful marching song in its entirety, enunciate every word and follow the rhythm. No one is permitted to start or stop singing midway -- and altering the melody, lyrics or musical arrangement is forbidden.
No whispering, applauding or talking on the phone, either, while the anthem is played.
There is no official word, yet, on how violators would be punished.
While some of those rules sound reasonable, others may be overly harsh, especially to Americans who are used to hearing adaptations of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as varied as Jimi Hendrix's instrumental rock version at the Woodstock music festival, to Whitney Houston's soulful rendition before the Super Bowl.

Grim Sydney investigation: Two hostages, gunman dead

The deadly siege of a central Sydney cafe has ended but the investigation is just beginning.
Australian authorities stormed the cafe where a self-styled Muslim cleric had been holding hostages early Tuesday, killing the gunman. They moved in some 16 hours after the siege began, after hearing gunfire inside the Lindt Chocolate Cafe, New South Wales police Commissioner Andrew P. Scipione told reporters.
Two of the 17 hostages initially held by the gunman died, according to Scipione. They were later identified as Katrina Dawson, 38, and Tori Johnson, 34. Other people were injured, including a police officer who suffered a wound to the face from gunshot pellets. All were described by police to be in stable condition.
"Understandably, there is a lot of speculation, but it will take time to clarify exactly what happened ... and why," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters Tuesday.
What did the gunman want? Why did he choose the cafe as his target?
"There is nothing more Australian than dropping in at the local cafe for a morning coffee, and it's tragic beyond words that people going about their everyday business should have been caught up in such a horrific incident," Abbott said.
He offered his condolences to people caught in the attack and to their loved ones.
"These events do demonstrate that even a country as free as open as generous and as safe as ours is vulnerable to acts of politically motivated violence," the Prime Minister said. "But they also remind us that Australia, and Australians are resilient and we are ready to respond."
Gunman had violent history
The gunman was identified as Man Haron Monis by an official with direct knowledge of the situation. According to his social media posts, the hostage-taker appears to have embraced a radical Sunni theology.

Housemaid abducts bosses’ two kids

A housemaid, identified simply as Juliet, has allegedly abducted the two children of her bosses who live on Gateway Crescent in the Magodo, Isheri area of Lagos State.

The 24-year-old housemaid was said to have fled home with the kids –Rafael (3), and 15-month-old Michael– who are nephews of a Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw, on Sunday evening after their parents went out around 6pm.

Our correspondent gathered that the kids’ mother, Mrs. Onajite Esharegharan, and her husband, Elvis, had decided to go for a shopping on the fateful day in celebration of the latter’s birthday.

It was learnt that the couple had instructed Juliet, who hails from Osun State, to lull the kids to sleep before they left home.

PUNCH Metro further learnt that Juliet, the children, their grandmother and her nurse ─ who also lives in the house ─ were in the sitting room watching television, when the generator went off. It was said that the elderly woman and the nurse decided to retire to their respective rooms, while Juliet went upstairs with the children.

It was when the couple came back home that the household discovered that the housemaid had sneaked out with the children.

It was gathered that Onajite secured the service of the fleeing housemaid last Tuesday through a sale portal, OLX, where a visitor, identified simply as Omolade, advertised .

Omolade had allegedly posted a number on the website for those who were interested in a “humble” housemaid to apply ─ an advertisement to which Onajite responded.   It was learnt that Omolade eventually took Juliet to Onajite’s office.

Our correspondent visited the couple at the Unity Estate, Ojodu, where Onajite’s aunt lives.

Onajite said, “After we came back from the church, the children looked tired and I told Juliet to take Michael to bed while I went to do my hair. He had not slept when I came back. That day (Sunday) was my husband’s birthday and we decided to have a couple’s outing. We told her to take the children to bed immediately because they were very tired.

“We got back home at 9pm. It was Abigail, the nurse, that opened the door for us. When we entered, everywhere was quiet and that was when my husband became suspicious because usually, our children would have run from upstairs to say welcome.

“She probably deceived the kids that she was taking them to their mum. Her telephone line and that of Omolade have been switched off since yesterday (Sunday). We lodged complaints at the Isheri Police Station and the Department of State Service. The police said it was beyond their capacity, but the DSS promised to track the housemaid down.”

Elvis, a businessman, said, “We just hope nothing is going to happen to them. We do not have any specific suspicion as to where she took them to.”

Onajite’s aunt, Mrs. Tina Obajuwana, said she was amazed by the housemaid’s action despite her calm look.

“When she was introduced to me on Saturday, I thought she would be a good woman. She looked gentle and hardly could anyone think she is evil,” she said.

In a post on a news portal, Nairaland, Henshaw urged members of the public to provide the family with information that could help in locating the children.

The post read in part, “Please help spread the news. My nephews (Rafael and Michael) have been missing since yesterday. These boys have been kidnapped! Lord locate them and bring them home safe and sound. Their parents left them at home briefly with the housemaid, grandmother and a nurse. The maid ran away with the children when the grandmother and the nurse went to bed. When the parents returned home, the children and maid were gone.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that efforts were on to rescue the victims.

He said, “There are efforts to rescue the children and apprehend the fleeing maid. Members of the public are encouraged to give information that will lead to the rescue of the kids and reunite them with their parents.”

Court hears arguments on Pistorius appeal

South African prosecutors say Oscar Pistorius' sentence of five years in prison for shooting dead his girlfriend is nowhere near enough punishment.
They want the double-amputee track star to be convicted of a more serious charge and to face a longer prison term.
On Tuesday, a court in Pretoria began hearing arguments for and against an appeal of the original verdict in which Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, in the death of Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius wasn't expected to attend the hearing.
'Shockingly light'
In appeal documents filed previously, the prosecution called Pistorius' sentence "shockingly light" and inappropriate. They had originally sought conviction on a charge of murder.
Prosecutors are arguing that Judge Thokozile Masipa misinterpreted a complex South African standard defining a technical form of intent that proved to be a central aspect of the case, according to CNN Legal Analyst Kelly Phelps.
As a result, prosecutors argue, he should not have been convicted on the culpable homicide charge chosen by the judge.
In explaining her sentence, Masipa concluded that Pistorius did not intend to kill Steenkamp.

The last POW: Story of an 85-year old 'spy'

After days of relentlessly questioning Merrill about his role in the Korean War, the North Korean "investigator" suddenly switched subjects.
"They started in on why I came," Newman recalled. "I said it was because I wanted to find out what was really going on in North Korea. Then they began to focus on my asking our guides to help me locate old soldiers or their relations or descendants if we got to Kuwol Mountain.
"They tried to make it into the main reason for my visit. I tried to get across that the business of me contacting people was just an aside. It was just incidental. It wasn't the main thing."
The investigator erupted. "You're lying! You're guilty of espionage. You've got to be honest with us."
"I apologized for trying to reconnect. I continued to maintain that the purpose was just to get a better understanding of North Korea. But that was the 'crime' in their eyes—illegally using the tour as a cover."
Wartime contacts
The North Koreans were particularly interested in an email that Newman had sent before his trip to his elderly wartime contacts in Seoul. The "investigator" asked about the "Kuwol comrades." Did they have an office? How big was it? How much time had Merrill spent with them?
"I was not completely forthcoming," Newman said. He sought to downplay the group and his connection to it, describing the Seoul office as small and nondescript, and lying about how much time he'd spent with the former guerrillas.
He was worried that his interrogators would realize that he wasn't telling the whole truth, but they never did.
The "investigator" also accused Merrill of "criticizing" the DPRK, referring specifically to his conversation with fellow tourist Bob Hamdrla in which he noted the resources North Korea's government wasted on monuments in such an impoverished country. Clearly, their guide Hyon-yi, who always seemed to be listening in to their conversations from her seat in the back of their minivan, had reported that comment to security officials.

South African judge throws out murder case

A judge threw out a high-profile murder case Monday against Shrien Dewani, who was accused of killing his wife while they were on their honeymoon in South Africa.
Judge Jeanette Traverso called the state's case "weak" and said evidence fell "far below" the standard needed for conviction.
It took years for prosecutors to bring him to trial over the killing of his wife, Anni.
Dewani, 34, was accused of hiring hit men to kill her in Cape Town in November 2010.
He has repeatedly denied orchestrating the killing, pleading not guilty at the start of the trial in October.
South African authorities were locked in a three-year court battle to get Dewani extradited from the UK to face trial.
But after the prosecution put forward its witnesses, the defense sought to have the charges dropped, citing a lack of evidence.
Differences seen in witnesses' accounts
Traverso found there was no reasonable chance a court would convict Dewani unless he took the stand and incriminated himself, CNN legal analyst Kelly Phelps said Monday.
Other witnesses contradicted each other and could not be taken at face value because they were accomplices to the killing of Anni Dewani, Phelps explained. She said it was likely that the judge's decision would be the end of the case, because the prosecution "can only appeal if the judge erred on a matter of law."

Iran charges US journalist detained since July

The family of a Washington Post correspondent detained in Iran since July is calling on Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei “to show the international community that Iran is indeed a country that respects its laws.”
Jason Rezaian, who holds dual American and Iranian citizenship, has been officially charged with unspecified crimes, the newspaper reported.
His family released a statement on Sunday saying that “in its ongoing disregard of Iran’s own laws, the Iranian judiciary has continued to deny Jason access to legal representation, denied his request for bail, and prevented access to review of his case file.”
Rezaian has been the paper’s bureau chief in Tehran since 2012.
He attended a 10-hour court session in Tehran on Saturday, during which a judge revisited his case and Rezaian signed paperwork to acknowledge he understood he was being charged, the Post said.
“We’re appalled by the injustice of it all,” Washington Post Executive Editor Marty Baron said in an email message on Sunday morning.
“It’s disgraceful treatment of a good and decent man. There is no justification for his continued imprisonment, just as there was no justification for his arrest in the first place,” Baron wrote.
“The Iranian government has never explained why Jason was detained or why he has been held for more than four months without access to a lawyer,” Baron said earlier. “Jason is an American citizen who was acting as a fully accredited journalist. … Any fair legal proceeding would quickly determine that any allegations against him are baseless.”
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urged Iran to free Rezaian.
“We call on (the) Iranian government to drop any charges against Jason Rezaian and release him so he can be reunited with his family,” the State Department tweeted on Kerry’s behalf.
Rezaian’s wife, Yeganeh Salehi, was arrested with him, but she was released on bail in October, according to the Post.
His family is asking for his “immediate and unconditional release.”

Leo Messi keeps pace with Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are matching each other hat-trick for hat-trick as their remarkable scoring battle continues apace.
Messi grabbed his third treble in four games Sunday to lift Barcelona to a 5-1 derby victory over Espanyol in the Nou Camp.
It came the day after Ronaldo took his La Liga record for hat-tricks to 23 as Real Madrid stayed top of the standings with a 3-0 win over Celta Vigo.
Barcelona's come from behind win has seen them move back into second spot, two points behind its arch rival.
Both men have scored over 200 goals at better than a goal a game since Ronaldo first moved to La Liga with Real in 2009, with a string of records falling into their grasp.
Barca needed Messi's magic after going behind to its city rival as Sergio Garcia converted with a fine early strike.
The Argentine ace conjured up the equalizer in first half injury time after being set up by Xavi on the edge of the penalty area.
It was to open the floodgates and within five minutes of the restart Luis Suarez had centered for Messi to put Barca ahead for the first time.
Gerard Pique connected with a Ivan Rakitic corner to head the home side further ahead with Pedro Rodriguez adding the fourth after a brilliant through ball from Jordi Alba.
Messi completed his 21st hat-trick for Barcelona near the end after an assist from Pedro to send home the majority of the 76,057 fans home happy.

France admits ownership of seized plane in Kano

France has admitted ownership of the cargo plane that was impounded by military authorities at the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, last Saturday.

It said that the flight was covered by a diplomatic clearance given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, noting that the Autonov 124 Russian commercial plane was forced to land at the Kano airport because of dense air traffic at Ndjamena airport,Chad.

A statement from the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, on Sunday, stated that the Antonov plane had to divert to an alternate international airport and the  closest airport facility being Kano, the Russian crew decided to fly there, to refuel, and to take off again to reach Njamena Airport.

He denied that the plane was carrying arms and ammunition, stressing that it was conveying two light Gazelle helicopters, spare parts and maintenance items belonging to the French Army.

Labriolle further explained that due to the nationality of the aircraft, and the nature of the cargo, airport authorities in Kano, decided to check the flight plan, the clearance and the cargo manifest before authorizing the plane to leave.

He said that official information has been supplied by the French Embassy in Nigeria, noting that the federal and airport authorities, being satisfied with the documents and the genuine character of the flight, have announced that the plane will be authorized to pursue its flight to Ndjamena.

The envoy stated  that the French Armed Forces had on December 6, 2014, chartered the flight on the Russian commercial company “224 Flight Unit,” to ship two light helicopters from Bangui to Ndjamena.

Pakistan raid kills top al-Qaeda leader

A top al-Qaeda leader, who has been indicted in the US over a bomb plot, has been killed during a raid in Pakistan’s tribal region, the country’s military said.

Adnan Shukrijumah was killed, along with two other suspected fighters, in Pakistan’s South Waziristan tribal area early on Saturday, a millitary source said.

“The al-Qaeda leader, who was killed by the Pakistan army in a successful operation, is the same person who had been indicted in the United Stated,” said a senior Pakistani army officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to journalists.

The FBI had offered a $5-million reward for his capture.

Federal prosecutors in the US alleged Shukrijumah had recruited three men in 2008 to receive training in the lawless tribal region of Pakistan for bombng New York subway system.

The New York indictment links him to the Manhattan plot and a similar never-executed scheme to attack British subways.

Attorney General Eric Holder has called that plot one of the most dangerous since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

Typhoon Hagupit barrels toward Philippines

Rain lashed parts of the Philippines on Saturday as Typhoon Hagupit barreled toward the coast, bringing roaring winds and the threat of massive storm surges.
Satellite images show the eye of the storm, which lost its super typhoon status again Saturday, about 250 kilometers (150 miles) off the eastern coast of the island nation.
The storm, the strongest so far this year, is expected to make landfall Saturday evening or Sunday morning, local time, over the Eastern Samar to Northern Samar area, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
It's packing sustained winds of 195 kilometers an hour (313 mph) near the storm's center, with gusts of up to 230 kph (370 mph).
Millions of people have been scrambling to get out of the typhoon's way, or battening down in hotels on higher ground, away from the coast.
Public storm warning signals have been applied in a number of provinces amid predictions winds could rip off roofs, cut power and damage buildings. Residents in low-lying areas have been warned about possible flash floods and landslides.
Preparing for the worst
While current forecasts show the storm skirting north of Tacloban, the people there aren't taking any chances.
They suffered enormously when Super Typhoon Haiyan smashed into the coast last November, killing more than 6,000 people and creating apocalyptic scenes of splintered houses, ships on streets and and debris piles for as far as the eye could see.
Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez said they're better prepared this year after learning the lessons of Haiyan a year ago. Residents are taking the storm warnings seriously and most people have fled the city, he said.

Al Qaeda kills U.S. hostage during raid

Al Qaeda militants killed American hostage Luke Somers in Yemen during a raid conducted by U.S. forces to rescue him, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Saturday.
President Barack Obama ordered the raid because "there were compelling reasons to believe Mr. Somers' life was in imminent danger," he said.
During the raid Friday, the militants also killed a second hostage, South African Pierre Korkie, according to his employer, Gift of the Givers.
It was the second such attempt by U.S. forces in two weeks.
In the first attempt in November, U.S. and Yemeni special forces outfitted with night visors embarked on the mission about a few miles from a cave where al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula -- or AQAP -- was holding hostages.
A gunbattle ensued, and the special forces killed all seven abductors and freed eight hostages. But the militants had separated Somers and four more hostages from the group and moved them to another location two days before the raid.
This week, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula released a video threatening to kill Somers and showing the American photojournalist pleading for his life.
A spokesman read a statement saying Somers would meet his inevitable fate if Washington did not meet the terror group's demands. The spokesman did not name the demands but said the U.S. government knew what they were.
They gave U.S. officials three days to comply. That time was due to run out.

deportation of igbos fashola wins case

Justice Musa Kurya of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday entered judgment in favour of the Lagos State Government in a suit filed by some people alleging a breach of their rights.
The applicants, Rosemary Nathaniel, Friday Ndukwe, Grace Igbochi, Ugulori Tutua, Chinyere Nicholas and Osondu Mbuto filed the suit on their behalf and 77 others, seeking the enforcement of their rights.
Joined as respondents in the suit are the Lagos State Government, the state attorney-general and the commissioner of police in the state.
The applicants had sought a declaration that their alleged arrest, remand and forceful deportation from Lagos to Onitsha, Anambra, in 2012 by the government, on the ground that they were non-indigenes of Lagos, was a violation of their personal liberty and freedom of movement.
The applicants had prayed the court to declare that the alleged action was a violation of Sections 35, 41(1) and 42 of the Constitution and Articles 6,12, 2 and 28 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.
They asked the court to award damages in the sum of N2 billion against the Lagos State Government and its agents for the alleged breach of their rights.
The applicants had also sought an order of the court compelling the respondents to apologise to them in at least three national dailies.
Justice Kurya held that there were conflicts in the affidavit evidence tendered by both parties, which ought to be resolved by oral evidence.
He said that efforts were made to serve the respondents with the court processes.
“Efforts have been made to get the respondents served, and from the proof of service, they have been served consequent upon which they filed their counter-affidavit.
“The respondents’ case is a complete denial of the facts and circumstances as put forward by the applicants.
“The respondents said in their affidavit that they did not deport the applicants to any place outside the territory of Lagos State at anytime.
“They said that, in furtherance of state government’s policy to cater for the welfare of citizens irrespective of their origins, the applicants were rescued from different parts of state while they were begging for alms and engaging in vices.
“The respondents said that those who could not provide details of their places of residence or businesses were taken to a rehabilitation centre at Majidun, Lagos, and given an opportunity to acquire vocational skills.
“They said that it was three months after that the applicants’ home state contacted the respondents and the applicant, who had successfully completed their programme and indicated their intention to rejoin their families.
“The respondents decided to assist the applicants in getting back to their families.
“It is trite law that where there are conflicts in affidavit evidence; it is normally resolved by oral evidence, and applicant counsel did not call for such oral evidence.
“The court was therefore, left with no option but to decide the matter on available evidence.
“I do not find any substance in the case of the applicant; there seems to be truth in the respondents’ averment.
“Consequently, judgment is entered in favour of the respondents against the applicant with no cost awarded to either party,” Kurya held.
Counsel to the applicants, Mr John Nwokwu, had argued that it was unlawful for Lagos State or any other state in the country to forcefully remove a citizen of Nigeria from its geographical boundary on account of indigeneship.
Nwokwu had prayed the court to order Lagos State to go in search of the said deported Igbo indigenes and to return them to Lagos.
He had also prayed for an order restraining the respondents from further deporting the applicants out of the state.
However, the Lagos State Government argued in its counter affidavit that the applicants’ deportation to Onitsha was not done out of malice but with the intention of re-uniting them with their families.
Lagos State averred that the applicants were assisted to re-join their families

Islamic State setting up Libya training camps, US says

Various Islamist militant groups are competing for power in eastern Libya
Islamic State militants have set up training camps in eastern Libya, the head of the US Africa command says.
Gen David Rodriguez said there could be "a couple of hundred'' IS fighters undergoing training at the sites.
He said the camps were at a very early stage, but the US was watching them "carefully to see how it develops".
Libya has been in turmoil since Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011, with various tribes, militias and political factions fighting for power.
Several Islamist groups are competing for power in the east of the country, with some militants recently declaring allegiance to IS.
Syria connection
Speaking in Washington on Wednesday, Gen Rodriguez said it was not yet clear how closely aligned the trainees were with IS.
"It's mainly about people coming for training and logistics support right now, for training sites," he said. "Right now it's just small and very nascent and we just have to see how it goes."
Correspondents say that in the aftermath of the revolution that ousted Gaddafi, many rebel fighters left to fight with militant groups in Syria, and some are believed to have returned home.
The elected government has lost Libya's three main cities amid the political crisis.
Benghazi, the country's second city, is in the hands of Islamist fighters, and the internationally recognised parliament is now based in the coastal town of Tobruk in the east.
The US has been leading an international coalition conducting air strikes against IS in Iraq and Syria in recent months.

Man, 27, rapes 11-yr-old girl with Down’s Syndrome

By Gabriel Enogholase
BENIN—A 27-year-old man, Austin Okonkwo, has been remanded in prison custody by an Evboriaria Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ikpoba-Okha, Edo State, for allegedly raping an 11-year-old Down Syndrome girl.
The accused, who was described with unprintable words when his victim was presented in the court, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge preferred against him.
Police Prosecutor, Aigbedion Obakpolor, informed the court that the offence was committed on November 29.
When the case was mentioned, Chief Magistrate Frank Idiake, who refused the bail application, said rape cases were on the increase.
A relative of the victim, who pleaded anonymity after the court sitting, said the accused took the girl to his room where the act was committed.
The relative said the victim cried of pains in her private part, which led to the arrest of the accused.
The case was adjourned to January 21, 2015 for continuation of trial.

Nigeria now 39th most corrupt nation, says TI

The global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, has ranked Nigeria as the 39th most corrupt nation in the world.

According to the Corruption Perception Index 2014 released on Wednesday, Nigeria scored 27 out of a maximum 100 marks to clinch the 136th position out of the 175 countries surveyed for the report.

Nigeria appeared to have improved by eight points against its 2013 rating of 144th of 175 countries last year.

It will be recalled that the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index ranked Nigeria 35th most corrupt nation in the world in 2012.

A statement issued by the Transparency International noted that more than two thirds of the 175 countries in the 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index scored below 50, on a scale from 0 (perceived to be highly corrupt) to 100 (perceived to be very clean).

Denmark is the least corrupt nation in the world, ranking first out of the 175 countries surveyed while North Korea and Somalia are the most corrupt nations of the world.

The Transparency International said while top performer, Denmark, had strong rule of law, support for civil society and clear rules governing the behaviour of those in public positions, it also set an example by announcing plans to create a public register, such as beneficial ownership information for all companies incorporated in Denmark.

This measure, according to the corruption watchdog, will make it harder for the corrupt to hide behind companies registered in another person’s name.

Botswana comes top as the least corrupt nation in Africa, ranking 31st least corrupt globally while South Africa is ranked 67th.

Transparency International Chairman, José Ugaz, in a statement on the TI website, said countries at the bottom needed to adopt radical anti-corruption measures in favour of their people.

“The 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index shows that economic growth is undermined and efforts to stop corruption fade when leaders and high level officials abuse power to appropriate public funds for personal gain,” Ugaz said.

According to Ugaz, countries at the top of the index should make sure they do not export corrupt practices to underdeveloped countries.

“The biggest falls were in Turkey (-5), Angola, China, Malawi and Rwanda (all -4). The biggest improvers were Côte d´Ivoire, Egypt, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (+5) and Afghanistan, Jordan, Mali and Swaziland (+4),” the statement said.

The anti-corruption group said it was currently running a campaign to unmask the corrupt, urging the European Union, the United States and G20 countries to follow Denmark’s lead and create public registers that would make clear “who really controls, or is the beneficial owner, of every company.”

13-year-old flees home with suspected lover

The police in Lagos are battling to find a 13-year-old girl, Chikwuo Ezennia, who reportedly fled her house with a yet-to-be-identified man, suspected to be her lover.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ezennia, who is in Basic 4, had come to Lagos from Nneni village in the Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State to spend her holiday with her relatives.

Our correspondent gathered that the girl, however, fled her relatives’ apartment on Ishola Bello Close, Iyalla Street, Alausa, Lagos, in the afternoon of Thursday, November 20, when the family had gone out.

It was gathered that when the girl’s aunt, Mrs. Ambrose Okolo, and her husband returned from work at about 6pm, Ezennia was nowhere to be found.

Our correspondent gathered that during the initial search for her, some neighbours told the Okolos that they saw the teenager walking away with a man in the afternoon.

Ezennia was said to have told the neighbours that her aunt maltreated her and had travelled away for a week. Hence, she would be staying with a friend during that period.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the family reported the matter at the Alausa Police Division the following day. It was gathered that the police invited some persons, who allegedly saw the girl, for interrogation.

Our correspondent gathered that Ezennia, who speaks only Igbo fluently, was supposed to return to her village by the end of December. It was further learnt that Ezennia had a record of fleeing home to stay with men when she was in the village in Anambra.

When PUNCH Metro visited the apartment on Tuesday, Okolo, who is a self-employed chartered accountant, said the family was anxious to know the supposed lover, who had been shielding the girl, adding that all efforts to locate her had proved unsuccessful.

She said, “Ezennia is just 13, but she looks big enough to be called a man’s wife. If you see her, you will think she is a lady. She just came from the village to spend some time with us and she is supposed to go back this December. But since that Thursday, we have yet to find her.

“The reason I suspect she may be with a lover is because of some recent developments. Just a week before that incident, I travelled to Benue for a programme, and she was alone with my children in the house. There is a phone that my children use which contains only my number and my husband’s.

“But when she fled home and we started the search, I picked up the phone and to my surprise, I saw a string of strange numbers.

“The children said Ezennia used the phone when I travelled.

“I wondered who she might have been calling since she is new in Lagos.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that calls and text messages sent to the numbers by the family since the day of the incident had not been replied to.

Efforts by our correspondent to obtain Ezennia’s photograph were unsuccessful as the teenager had yet to take any since she arrived in Lagos.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.

He said Ezennia was still on the police’s list of missing persons.

“If seen, the public should contact Alausa Police Station,” he added.

Suicide bomber targets Iranian ambassador’s house in Yemen

A suicide attacker drove a car laden with explosives at the Iranian ambassador’s residence in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, security officials said, killing as many as three people.

Ambassador Hasan Nam Wadi was not harmed when the attack took place in the diplomatic district of Hada, officials said.

The Wednesday morning blast also heavily damaged several buildings in the area.

Interior ministry said that one of the embassy guards and two transpassers, a woman and a child, were killed in the attack, adding that four were injured, one in critical condition.

Shia Muslim Houthi rebels close to Iran took control of Sanaa in September and fanned out across the country, clashing with Sunni tribesmen and also with Yemen’s local branch of al-Qaeda.

Hakim al-Masmari, the editor-in-chief for the Yemen Post newspaper, told Al Jazeera that no one has claimed responsibility yet for the incident.

“It is probable that it was al-Qaeda behind the attack as the group often targets Yemeni state targets as well as Houthi rebels and Shias,” he said.

“This is first of many expected attacks that al-Qaeda has been threatening against Houthi and Shia targets as Houthi offensive against al-Qaeda back tribesmen continue,” he added

“This shows how tense the situation in Yemenis. Iran is seen as the one of the main backers of Houthis in Yemen.”

The US and Yemen’s Sunni Gulf neighbours suspect Iran is meddling in the impoverished state and there are fears of sectarian warfare spreading to other countries of the region. Iran denies interfering in Yemeni affairs.

Iranian diplomats have been targeted in Yemen in the past. One Iranian diplomat is still being held hostage by suspected fighters and another was killed this year when he resisted a kidnapping attempt.

Head of Egypt’s Al-Azhar condemns IS ‘barbarity’

The head of Al-Azhar, one of the most prestigious centres of Sunni Islam learning, on Wednesday condemned “barbaric crimes” committed by the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

Militants are acting “under the guise of this holy religion and have given themselves the name ‘Islamic State’ in an attempt to export their false Islam,” Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb told the opening session of a two-day international conference in Cairo on fighting extremism.

“I wonder and ask why this blind division exists that has tainted Arab blood,” Sheikh Tayeb said, adding that religious, political and economic factors were behind the emergence of groups such as IS.

But “some feel that our suffering is also a plot by Israel so it remains the most powerful country in the region, and that possibility can not be excluded”, he said.

Sheikh Tayeb called on the US-led coalition that is fighting IS “to confront those countries who support terrorism financially and militarily”.

“But we should not ignore our own responsibility for the emergence of extremism that has led to the formation of organisations such as Al-Qaeda and other armed groups.”

The United States launched its first air strikes against IS in Iraq in August, and in late September extended the campaign to IS targets in Syria, joined by aircraft from several Arab allies.

On Wednesday, the Pentagon said that Iranian warplanes had also carried out air strikes against IS in Iraq, although the foreign ministry in Tehran refused to confirm or deny the information.

The Cairo conference, organised by Al-Azhar, has delegates from several countries including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Morocco taking part.

Japan launches asteroid-hunting spacecraft

Japan’s space agency has launched an ambitious space mission which aims to mine an asteroid and hunt for clues about the birth of the solar system.

About the size of a fridge, and fitted with an explosive bullet, Japan’s asteroid-hunting spacecraft embarked on a six-year space mission on Wednesday.

Building on a previous mission, which managed to bring rock fragments from another asteroid back to Earth in 2010, this time Hayabusa2 aims to do more.

The $260m spacecraft uses ion engines – a system which uses electricity to accelerate gas particles.

“That makes a jet that goes extremely fast about 30-40km/s,” said Dr Francisco Diego, from University College London. “Although the mass of this gas is very very low, it produces a little bit of a push in a very  efficient way and that’s enough to steer the spacecraft along the orbit.”

Hayabusa2 has a long way to go: more than 5 billion kilometres.

For the next two and a half years it will play catch-up with asteroid 1999 JU3. The asteroid is one of many that orbit the Sun, mainly between Earth and Mars. Once Hayabusa2 arrives, it will spend 18 months studying the asteroid.

Experiments include dropping tiny rover robots onto the surface to make scientific tests of the structure and chemical make-up of the asteroid.

The most ambitious part of the mission involves firing a high-speed explosive bullet into the asteroid’s crust.

“It’s going to produce a crater,” said Diego. “It’s going to produce a puff of material, ejecting material out into space, which is going to be collected by this instrument, and part of that cloud is going to be brought back.”

When that process is completed, Hayabusa2 will begin a year-long journey back to Earth, where it is hoped to arrive in 2020.

Scientists say the rock from inside the asteroid will be less weathered by the space environment and by heat. They hope these rocks will answer some fundamental questions about the early stages of the formation of the solar system, how Earth evolved, and where the Earth’s oceans may have formed.

Obama seeks $75m for police body cameras

Spurred by the Ferguson, Missouri shooting, President Barack Obama is calling for $75m in federal spending to get 50,000 more police to wear body cameras that record their interactions with civilians.

However, Obama is not seeking to pull back federal programs that provide military-style equipment to local law enforcement.

The president was making the announcements on Monday from the White House during a series of meetings with his Cabinet, civil rights leaders, law enforcement officials and others.

At least for now, Obama is staying away from Ferguson in the wake of a racially charged uproar over a grand jury’s decision last week not to charge the police offer who fatally shot unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Obama is proposing a three-year $263m spending package to increase use of body-worn cameras, expand training for law enforcement and add more resources for police department reform.

The White House has said the cameras could help bridge deep mistrust between law enforcement and the public.

Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett, reporting from Washington DC, said that it offers an opportunity for similar disputes with the police to be recorded.

“This would eliminate situations not just in Ferguson but around the United States,” she said.

Republican aide resigns over criticism of Obama daughters

A senior Republican employee is resigning after her comments that the Obama daughters should “try showing a little class” caused a firestorm of criticism on social media this over the weekend.

Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Tennessee Rep. Stephen Fincher, confirmed to CNN that she planned to resign onMonday.

She faced heavy backlash when she wrote a Thanksgiving-Day screed against the Obama daughters, as well as the President and first lady, on Facebook that quickly went viral across the web.

In it, she scolded Malia and Sasha Obama, 16 and 13 years old respectively, for what she said was their inappropriate outfits and their bored looks during Wednesday’s turkey pardoning ceremony, which they attended alongside their father.

“Dear Sasha and Malia: I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play,” Lauten wrote in the post.

“Then again, your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter,” she added. “So I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department.”

Lauten went on to tell them to “stretch yourself…rise to the occasion” and “act like being in the White House matters to you.”

“Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don’t make faces during televised, public events,” she added.

Hours later, after her comments picked up steam on social media, Lauten deleted it and wrote another post apologising for her comments.

Neither chief of staff Jessica Carter nor Fincher responded to requests for comment via email.

Terrorists behead Tunisian policeman

“Terrorists” in Tunisia have abducted and decapitated an off-duty policeman, media reports on Monday cited the interior ministry as saying.

The officer and his brother were in a car in the Kef area of the northwest when gunmen seeking to rob them immobilised the vehicle.

During the robbery, the attackers discovered that the man was in the police and they kidnapped and later killed him, radio stations Mosaique and Express-FM quoted a ministry spokesman as saying.

The man’s brother was not harmed in Sunday’s attack.

Security forces are now engaged in a mopping up operation in the mountainous area, which is close to the frontier with Algeria.

Farther south but still in the border area a soldier on another operation was killed when a mine exploded on Monday, the defence ministry spokesman told AFP.

“Today men in a terrorist group were tracked to Mount Sammama near Kasserine,” Belhassan Oueslati said.

“Aircraft were used and commando forces made a ground assault. A soldier on board a Hummer was killed when a mine exploded,” he said, adding that the operation was still under way.

Since the revolution of January 2011, Tunisia has seen a rise in Islamist extremism. For the past two years, the army has been hunting jihadists in the border area.

Deadly ambushes by gunmen on the police and army are common in the region, where cross-border smuggling of fuel and food is also rife

Gadhimai: World's biggest ritual slaughter

Motilal Kushwaha had promised the Hindu goddess Gadhimai that he would offer her a male goat if one of his children found a job.
Last year his son was successful -- and on Saturday he was one of tens of thousands of people killing the animals at the temple of Gadhimai in southern Nepal as part of the biggest religious mass slaughter in the world.
"From my village everyone has made a vow [to offer animals]," says Kushwaha from Bariyarpur, a community in Bara district about 60 miles south of Kathmandu. Some, he explains, are glad they have got a son or a daughter, others that a different form of good fortune has befallen them.
The ritual sacrifice of goats, buffaloes and roosters in temples and at home is widespread in Nepal where 80 percent of the population are Hindu.
Some five million people from adjoining districts -- and also from the bordering Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh -- will attend the festival, according to local authorities, although only two days are dedicated to the sacrificial ritual itself.
The slaughter follows a set pattern: on Friday male water buffalo calves are killed while on Saturday attentions switches to goats.
Officials estimate that up to 10,000 buffalo calves and 150,000 goats will be offered to Gadhimai -- the goddess of power -- during the ritual. Watch a CNNi report on the ritual
But these numbers will be much lower than those of 2009, the last time the five-yearly Gadhimai festival took place, thanks to advocacy efforts by animal rights activists. In that year nearly 20,000 buffalo calves were killed, according to temple officials and more than 200,000 goats were slaughtered.
"We object to the cruelty with which animals are treated," says Pramada Shah of Animal Welfare Network Nepal. "There is random hacking of animals in open space. Not all animals have their heads chopped off. Some take up to 40 minutes to die."
The participants -- who hack the animals in an enclosed arena with large knives -- are licensed by the Gadhimai Festival Management and Development Committee. This year about 400 people will kill animals, according to Kushwaha, who is also the committee's secretary.

two sisters beating up three men, who were allegedly sexually harassing

The incident was captured by a passenger on a mobile phone
A video of two sisters beating up three men, who were allegedly sexually harassing them on a moving bus in India, has gone viral on social media.
The men have been arrested and charged with assault, police said.
Friday's incident, recorded by a passenger on a mobile phone, took place in the northern state of Haryana.
Violence against Indian women has been in the spotlight since the gang rape and murder of a student on a bus in the capital, Delhi, in December 2012.
The attack caused outrage and prompted India to introduce stringent anti-rape laws.
The latest incident happened in Rohtak district when the two students, 22-year-old Aarti and 19-year-old Pooja, were on their way home.
Younger sister Pooja told BBC Hindi that the three young men "threatened us and abused us".
"The men started to abuse me and touch me. I told them 'if you touch me again, you'll get beaten up'. They called a friend on the phone and told him to 'come over because we have to beat up some girls'," Pooja said.
She said they decided to take on the attackers when other passengers did not come to their help.
"No one came forward in the bus to help us. So we took out our belts in self-defence [and hit the men]. If only the other passengers had helped us, we would not have needed to retaliate in this way," she said.
However, the video of the incident shows at least one male passenger repeatedly trying to separate one of the men from the women.
The sisters said the men pushed them out of the bus when it came to a halt after some distance and attacked them again.
They said they retaliated by throwing a brick at the men who then fled.
Police say they received a call from the women on Friday afternoon, and the three men were arrested on Sunday evening.
Senior police official S Anand told The Hindu newspaper that they were contemplating action against the bus driver and his helper.
"The driver was supposed to take the bus to the nearest police station. But he did not do so. The conductor also did not intervene. We are considering legal action against them," he said.
Correspondents say public abuse of women - called "Eve teasing" in India - is rampant in parts of the country.
"Eve teasing" often makes life miserable and even dangerous for women when they go out in public.
Meanwhile, the sisters have received much support on social media and many have been tweeting to praise the #RohtakBravehearts.
Deepti Kaul hoped others would follow the sisters' example:

Baby found buried on Sydney beach

Police said they were trying to locate the parents of the baby
Australian police have urged the mother of a baby found dead and buried in the sand at Sydney's Maroubra beach to come forward.
The body, which was discovered by two young boys, was buried under 30cm (12in) of sand, police said.
Police said they could not immediately tell the age or gender of the baby, as the body was badly decomposed. A post-mortem examination will be conducted.
It comes a week after a newborn was found alive in a drain in Sydney.
"Come and talk to us, seek some advice, we need to talk with you," said New South Wales state police commissioner Andrew Scipione. He also asked that anyone who might know the mother to speak to authorities.
'Tragic event'
Police said that the two boys, aged six and seven, discovered the body on Sunday morning while digging in the sand at Maroubra beach.
The baby was a "very small infant child" and had been buried naked, police said.
"The sex and age of the child is unable to be determined at this point due to the decomposition of the body," Police Inspector Andrew Holland told reporters.

Police searched through sand dunes on Maroubra beach on Sunday
"Obviously everyone is upset," he added. "It's a tragic event. Something like this doesn't happen every day and it affects everyone involved."
He said that police were investigating birth, death and marriage records, and visiting local hospitals, to try to locate the parents of the child.
"Police are concerned about the welfare of the mother involved and hope she sought medical assistance," he added.
The two boys who discovered the body are receiving counselling.
On 23 November, cyclists found a newborn baby abandoned in a stormwater drain in western Sydney.
Police said the boy had been left in the drain for five days before he was rescued.
The mother of the boy has been charged with attempted murder. Her case is expected to be heard in court on 12 December.
New South Wales Police Minister Stuart Ayres said the twin cases raised questions about what should be done to help families that are desperate.
"There is no doubt we find ourselves with two cases that are currently under investigation that requires us to think seriously about what we need to help families that are in crisis," he said according to AFP news agency.

Suspect robs to source funds for musical album

The police in Lagos have arrested two armed robbery suspects who allegedly specialised in robbing motorists on the highway and snatching expensive vehicles. PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects, John Sunday and Onyekachi Oshonu, were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Friday, November 21. Our correspondent learnt that Sunday, 25, and Oshonu, 24, were nabbed in their hideout in Agege, Lagos State at about 10pm. According to the police, information reached the command on same Friday that some robbers had converged on a hideout and were planning to unleash terror on the area. Subsequently, decoy detectives from SARS were said to have bust the hideout and arrested the duo, while other gang members fled. Our correspondent also learnt that a revolver pistol was recovered from the suspects. Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Sunday from Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, said he was a musician, adding that he took to robbery to source funds for his yet-to-be-released album. Sunday added that his brand of music was Reggae. He said, “I am a musician. I sing Tureke Reggae. I was planning to release my first album, but there was no money. It was where I was putting up as a commercial driver that I met Onyeka. We were plying Agege to the Oshodi area. “Later, we met the gang. They told us they were planning to go out, snatch some cars, sell them and make money. So, we joined. We usually robbed with two locally–made guns. We did not have a pistol. We went for the first operation, but we were arrested after the second. “I love music, and I was looking for money to establish myself as a musician.” Meanwhile, Oshonu, who hailed from Enugu-Ezike, Enugu State, added that their guns were with a third member of the gang, identified simply as Oguchi, who was one of the fleeing gang members. “I have gone on only two operations. I don’t use a gun. The gang member who has the two guns has not been arrested yet. I was formerly driving a commercial bus in the Agege area. I just married this year, and I needed to take care of my family,” he said. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the arrest, said investigations were ongoing on the matter. He said, “The suspects have confessed to the crime. Further efforts are being intensified to apprehend other gang members who are presently at large. Meanwhile, investigation continues on the matter.” Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved.
