OMG what is pope francis displaying by praying at a mosque???

Pope Francis is wrapping up his three-day visit to Turkey with a liturgy alongside the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians and a meeting with young refugees who have fled Syria, Iraq and other conflict zones.

Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I will issue a joint declaration at the end of their meeting on Sunday, which falls on an important feast day for the Orthodox Church.

The Catholic and Orthodox churches split in 1054 over differences on the primacy of the papacy, and there was a time when patriarchs had to kiss popes’ feet.

At the end of a joint prayer service on Saturday, the second day of his visit, Francis bowed to Bartholomew and asked for his blessing, a remarkable display of papal deference to an Orthodox patriarch that underscored Francis’ hope to end the schism.

Also on Saturday, Francis took part in a Muslim prayer alongside the grand mufti of Istanbul.

Francis stood with his head bowed and hands clasped in front of him in a two minutes of silent prayer inside the 17th-century Sultan Ahmet Mosque, aiming to show respect for Islam and encourage stronger ties between the two faiths.

“May God accept it,” Rahmi Yaran, the grand mufti of Istanbul, told Francis at the end of the prayer.

Earlier Yaran gave Francis a tour of the mosque, which is famed for its elaborate blue tiles and cascading domes and better known as the Blue Mosque.

Francis then visited the nearby Haghia Sofia, which was the main Byzantine church in Constantinople – present-day Istanbul – before being turned into a mosque following the Muslim conquest of the city in 1453.

The Haghia Sophia is now museum, although some Islamic groups want it to be converted back into a mosque.

A few dozen well-wishers outside Haghia Sophia waved a combination of the Turkish and the flag of the Holy See.

In meetings with Turkish leaders in the capital Ankara on Friday, Francis urged Muslim leaders to condemn the “barbaric violence” being committed in Islam’s name against religious minorities in Iraq and Syria.

He reaffirmed that military force was justified to halt the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group’s advance, and called for greater dialogue among Christians, Muslims and people of all faiths to end fundamentalism.

Retired soccer star and model David Beckham and his and Victoria Beckham's his eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, were recently involved in a car crash in their native England and thankfully, were not injured.

The accident took place on Saturday.

"David and Brooklyn were involved in a car accident, they did not suffer any injuries and as I understand it, both passengers in the other vehicle were unharmed," a source told E! News. "David and Brooklyn were shaken by the accident but thankfully OK."

The accident occurred outside the training ground of soccer team Arsenal, where Brooklyn, 15, had played in a match with the group's youth team, the U.K. newspaper The Telegraph reported. The outlet said David, 39, was driving an Audi and had picked up his son when the crash occurred, adding that the two were spared serious injury due to the deployment of the car's airbags.

David has been in previous auto accidents, including two with Brooklyn. No injuries have been reported.

In 2011, the two were involved a car crash on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles, one of the busiest highways in the United States.

In 2013, David and Brooklyn got into a car wreck in front of their family's home in Beverly Hills, which the Beckhams bought in 2007 after the soccer stud signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy team. He left in 2012 and the family eventually moved back to England and has kept their lavish California house.

This past August, David crashed his motorcyle on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip, located not far from the family's home.

David and wife Victoria, 40, are also parents to sons Romeo Beckham, 12, and Cruz Beckham, 9 and daughter Harper Beckham, 3.

US police officer who shot teenager resigns

Darren Wilson insists he acted in accordance with the law
US police officer Darren Wilson - who fatally shot unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in the Missouri town of Ferguson - has resigned from the force, his lawyer Neil Bruntrager says.
Mr Bruntrager told US media the resignation was effective immediately.
Mr Wilson himself has been quoted by as saying he had taken the step because of threats of violence if he stayed.
Ferguson and other US towns and cities saw rioting after a jury decided Mr Wilson should not be charged.
BBC Washington correspondent Tom Esslemont says that to many in Ferguson, it was only a matter of time before Mr Wilson resigned.
The 9 August shooting in the St Louis suburb and last week's state grand jury decision triggered a nationwide debate over relations between black communities and law enforcement.
'Resignation letter'
The St Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper said the 28-year-old Mr Wilson had decided to step down after his police department received threats that violence would follow if he stayed on as an employee.

An undated family snapshot of Michael Brown

Demonstrators flooded on to the streets of Ferguson after the grand jury verdict, with several buildings set alight

It was the latest bout of rioting since the August shooting
The newspaper published what it said was his resignation letter, which read: "I have been told that my continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that I cannot allow.
"For obvious reasons, I wanted to wait until the grand jury made their decision before I officially made my decision to resign.
"It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal."
In a subsequent telephone interview on Saturday evening, the paper quoted Mr Wilson as saying: "I'm resigning of my own free will. I'm not willing to let someone else get hurt because of me."
He added that resigning was "the hardest thing I've ever had to do".
Family 'crushed'
Earlier this week, Mr Wilson told US media that before the shooting, Mr Brown had pushed him back into his car, hit him and grabbed at his drawn gun, and said that he felt "like a five-year-old holding on to [US wrestler] Hulk Hogan".
The policeman said he had feared for his life.
Mr Brown's supporters said he was attempting to surrender to the policeman when he was shot. Some witnesses said the teenager, who was unarmed, had his hands up.
However, the state prosecutor said physical evidence had contradicted some of the witness statements.
The family of Mr Brown, who was 18, have said they felt "crushed" by the decision.
Their son was killed after being shot six or seven times.
Many in the African-American community had called for Mr Wilson to be charged with murder, but after three months of deliberation a Missouri grand jury - of nine white and three black members - made no recommendation of charges.
The decision means Mr Wilson will not face state criminal charges over the shooting.
Protests - some but not all of them violent - followed in a number of US cities, including New York, Washington and Los Angeles.
More than 100 people were arrested during the demonstrations.
The US justice department has also launched a federal investigation into whether Mr Wilson violated Mr Brown's civil rights.

11 feared killed in Rivers gun attack

By Jimitota Onoyume
About eleven persons were feared dead in Omoku, headquarters of Ogba Egbema Ndoni local government area of Rivers State, following a shooting spree by gunmen who stormed the area Friday night and yesterday afternoon.
Community sources told Sunday Vanguard that the gunmen, who  wore masks, shot indiscriminately for several hours on Friday night, adding that they later fled when men of the Joint Task Force, JTF, engaged them in a  shootout. The gun were said to have regrouped, yesterday afternoon, to continue the shooting at the market.
Sources feared  the shooting may not be unconnected with plans by some politicians to hijack the collection of Permanent Voter Cards  which commenced in the area on Friday.

File: Port Harcourt  during a recent crisis.
Among those killed, sources said, was  a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who was simply identified as Godspower.
The Chairman of the local government area, Mr Austin Ayamadu, who condemned the incident, appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring that security men had taken charge of the area. Ayamadu said the gunmen went from one street to the other shooting before security men swung into action.
The Chairman, who could not confirm the death toll, said some persons died in the incident.
“Unknown gunmen invaded Omoku and started by killing an elder of the APC and  some  other people were also killed. The figure I  cannot immediately say because of the security situation, but it is more than five”, he said.
Rivers State  Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, who confirmed the  development, said it was a clash between rival cult groups, stressing that security men were on top of the situation.

U.N.: Number of Ebola cases now tops 16,000

The number of confirmed, probable and suspected cases of Ebola in the current outbreak has surpassed 16,000, according to the World Health Organization, with nearly 7,000 deaths from those cases.
The United Nations' health agency issued its latest numbers Friday, focusing on how Ebola has affected Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone -- the three countries where the vast majority of cases have occurred.
Liberia has been hit hardest, with the WHO reporting 7,244 confirmed and potential cases as well as 4,181 deaths.
Both numbers reported Friday are significantly higher than those released earlier in the week. The WHO and other health agencies have long said the scale of the Ebola outbreak is likely significantly worse than even the current high numbers indicate, because many people died before they could be diagnosed and many contracted the disease in remote areas without ready access to health care.
The U.N. health agency recently noted that the situation in Liberia has stabilized in the past five weeks, after the rate of new cases declined from mid-September through mid-October.
The one country where WHO has reported a significant uptick -- with 385 new confirmed cases during the week of November 23 and 533 in the previous week -- is Sierra Leone.
Ebola and similar contagious diseases are not new to Africa, but the latest outbreak has been particularly virulent and deadly. About 60% of those infected have died from the virus, according to WHO.
The rapid infection rate fanned concerns that, due to the relative ease of international travel, Ebola might spread outside the continent. In fact, there have been new cases of Ebola in the United States and Spain, though such incidences remain a tiny fraction of the overall outbreak.
The United Nations has urged countries worldwide to pitch in, asking in September for nearly $1 billion to help Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in their efforts to control the deadly disease.
While experimental drugs and treatments have been used to treat Ebola, there's no known vaccine that can prevent the disease...

Sick paedophile jailed after blackmailing girls aged 13-15 to send him nude pictures on Snapchat

Vile Aaron Finnie, 20, forced the girls to comply by telling them he would commit suicide and even sent one a picture of him with a gun to his head

A sick paedophile who lured girls as young as 13 into sending him naked pictures on Snapchat has been jailed.

Vile Aaron Finnie, 20, ensnared 11 different girls aged between 13 and 15 into sending or receiving indecent images.

The court heard how he would look for girls on Facebook, then move his messaging to Snapchat, where images are not recorded permanently.

Finnie used emotional blackmail to force the girls to comply, telling them he would commit suicide and even sent one a picture of him holding a gun to his head.

He targeted girls living close to his home address and tried to arrange meetings and sleepovers with them.

On one occasion he even had to be escorted off school premises after turning up and an after-hours club to take a 15-year-old schoolgirl home with him.

Creep: Aaron Finnie lured girls as young as 13 into sending him naked pictures on Snapchat
Finnie has now been told he will spend three years behind bars for his crimes.

Prosecuting, Mr Joss Ticehurst, told Exeter Crown Court, he plagued young girls on Facebook, persuading them to meet up with him.

He said: "He befriended girls on Facebook and Snapchat, sending images of his erect penis and seeking to obtain photographs of them in return.

"There were 11 girls who were treated in this way. It appears there has been more extensive contact with other young girls but they do not appear on the indictment.

"There were 7,000 pages of Facebook conversations with young females and he was a prolific Facebook user who was looking for girls to make friend requests to.

"There were numerous Facebook conversations going on with a number of different people at the same time which were all of a sexual nature and indicated he was seeking to meet girls."

Mr Ticehurst said many of the girls were upset and flustered by his demands for pictures and shocked and frightened by his threats to commit suicide.

Police found 7,000 pages of Facebook messages on his computer and believe he may have been involved in sexualised conversations with many more girls.

He was arrested and bailed twice with conditions not to contact girls on the internet but carried on doing so until he was finally remanded in custody earlier this year.

Finnie, from, Paignton, Devon, admitted eight counts of sending indecent messages, six of causing under age girls to send him images, and one of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Finnie was sentenced to three years behind bars for his crimes and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life, when he appeared in court on Friday, November 28.

Sentencing, Judge Francis Gilbert, QC, said: "You befriended 11 girls who were under 16 online and asked them to send you indecent photographs, despite knowing their ages.

"You also sent indecent images of yourself. You threatened to commit suicide and sent a picture of you holding a gun to your head.

"Can you imagine the stress that would have put upon a young girl. She must have been very, very distressed.

"These are serious offences and are all the more reprehensible because you continued to offend in the same way in deliberate and obvious breach of your bail conditions."

Slavery levels in UK 'higher than thought'

There could be between 10,000 and 13,000 victims of slavery in the UK, higher than previous figures, analysis for the Home Office suggests.
Modern slavery victims are said to include women forced into prostitution, "imprisoned" domestic staff and workers in fields, factories and fishing boats.
The figure for 2013 is the first time the government has made an official estimate of the scale of the problem.
The Home Office has launched a strategy to help tackle slavery.
It said the victims included people trafficked from more than 100 countries - the most prevalent being Albania, Nigeria, Vietnam and Romania - as well as British-born adults and children.
Data from the National Crime Agency's Human Trafficking Centre last year put the number of slavery victims in the UK at 2,744.
The assessment was collated from sources including police, the UK Border Force, charities and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority.
The Home Office said it used established statistical methodology and models from other public policy contexts to estimate a "dark figure" that may not have come to the NCA's attention.
It said the "tentative conclusions" of its analysis is that the number of victims is higher than thought.
Concerted action
The Modern Slavery Bill going through Parliament aims to provide courts in England and Wales with new powers to protect people who are trafficked into the countries and held against their will. Scotland and Northern Ireland are planning similar measures.

Egypt court dismisses murder charges against Mubarak

An Egyptian court has thrown out a case against former President Hosni Mubarak for conspiring to murder protesters during the 2011 Egyptian revolution due to a technicality and lack of jurisdiction.

Mubarak and his sons Alaa and Gamal were also cleared by Chief Judge Mahmoud Kamel al-Rashidi of corruption charges related to exporting gas to Israel.

The same Cairo court acquitted Habib al-Adli, former Mubarak-era interior minister, and six senior security commanders of conspiracy to murder protesters.

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara said the trial was highly politicised and the verdict was “stunning”.

“I am speechless,” he said. “Because the judge has told us not to discuss his verdict until we have examined the 1,430 page document.”

“This is an arrogant attempt to make the Egyptian people feel sorry for coming out to the streets,” he added.

“This is trying to retrieve the old Egypt and basically clear three decades of dictatorship. Basically we have everyone that has been in charge of the violence and corruption cleared of all charges, while in prison we have thousands of peaceful civil rights activists.”

Mubarak, 86, had been accused along with the former police commanders of involvement in the killing of 846 demonstrators during the 2011 revolt that ended his three-decade rule. Only 239 of the deaths were considered by the court, the presiding judge said.

An appeals court had overturned an initial life sentence for Mubarak in 2012 on a technicality.

U.N. releases U.S. torture report

The events in Ferguson, Missouri, are a "tragedy," but the U.N. Committee Against Torture "has to respect the decision" of authorities not to prosecute police Officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, committee member Alessio Bruni said Friday.
Bruni spoke at a news conference about the release of a committee report that criticizes, among other things, racial profiling and excessive use of force by U.S. police.
While the report does not specifically mention the Ferguson case, it does express concern about the militarization of U.S. police departments.
The U.S. was one of eight countries getting a periodic review of compliance with the U.N. Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
The other countries getting reports from the committee Friday were Sweden, Ukraine, Venezuela, Australia, Burundi, Croatia and Kazakhstan.
Much of the 16-page report that focuses on the U.S. deals with Guantanamo Bay and the treatment of detainees there, but it also includes a section on police brutality and criticizes "excessive use of force by law enforcement officials, in particular against persons belonging to certain racial and ethnic groups."
The report's release comes about two weeks after Brown's parents spoke to the committee in Geneva, Switzerland, in testimony behind closed doors. Though the talk was private, the delegation that organized their trip said the couple told the committee that Brown's killing, and force used by police officers during protests that followed, "represent violations of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment."
The U.N. report mentions "deep concern at the frequent and recurrent police shootings or fatal pursuits of unarmed black individuals."
Instances of police brutality should be investigated by entities that have "no institutional or hierarchical connection between the investigators and the alleged perpetrators," the report recommends.
The U.N committee also expressed concern about juveniles in the criminal justice system, the use of the death penalty and sexual violence in the U.S. military.

Gunmen kidnap three expatriate workers in Bayelsa State

By Samuel Oyadongha, Yenagoa
Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped three expatriate workers in Bayelsa State.
Saturday Vanguard learnt the expatriates were seized, Wednesday, at Emakalakala in Ogbia local government area of the state.
The abduction, has again brought to the fore the parlous state of security in the riverine enclave of the state where pirates and other criminal elements have been terrorizing law abiding citizens.
Though the nationalities of the abducted expatriates could not be ascertained they were said to be working for a construction firm, Elmerit.
Sources told Saturday Vanguard that the gunmen snatched their victims who were working on road projects in the area at gunpoint and dragged them into a waiting boat and sped away into the surrounding creeks.
As at press time, no group had claimed responsibility for the abduction.
The Spokesman of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta code-named ‘Operation Pulo Shield’, Colonel Mustapha Anka, and the state Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Rowland Eboka could not be reached for comments.
But a security source, who pleaded not to be named confirmed the abduction.

Nigerian mosque attack deaths climb to 120

    UPDATED: NOV 29, 2014 01:23 GMT
At least 120 people were killed and 270 others wounded on Friday when two suicide bombers blew themselves up and gunmen opened fire on a Muslim congregation at Friday prayers in the central mosque in northern Nigeria's largest city of Kano, a rescue official said.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the toll could rise, as some of the wounded were in critical condition and may not survive.
A third bomb exploded outside the mosque among a crowd of worshipers.
The attacks come two weeks after the emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, one of Nigeria's most influential monarchs, called for self-defense, urging people to procure arms and fight Islamist militant group Boko Haram‎, which has a significant presence in the area.
The emir made the call at the same mosque where Friday's attack occurred.
Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Boko Haram is the main suspect. Many believe the attacks were reprisals for the emir's call to arms against the terror group.
A CNN reporter at the morgue of the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital -- one of two hospitals treating victims of the attacks -- counted 94 bodies and was told by a health professional involved in collecting bodies that 38 bodies already had been identified and taken by relations for burial.
"We have around 140 dead bodies brought from the mosque and more than 160 being treated for various injuries," the health professional said, asking not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on casualties.
"This is only for this hospital. Other corpses and wounded victims have been taken to Nassarawa Specialist Hospital," he said.
At Nassarawa Specialist Hospital, a rescue worker said the facility had received scores of injured and dead.

How police smashed kidnap gang in Lagos

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderantin, yesterday, said the 33-year-old leader of a notorious gang of kidnappers terrorizing Ajah and Epe areas of the state has been arrested.
Aderanti, who made this known at the eight edition of the Security Town Hall meeting organized by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, said two AK-47 rifles were recovered from an unregistered Volkswagen Passat Saloon car belonging to the gang.
Vanguard gathered that the suspect, identified as Anthony Adidi, masterminded the kidnap of Ladi Ene Garba, staff of Keystone Bank, at Eleko area of Lagos and one Patrick, last June at Eleko area of Ajah, as they drove to their houses.
Police sources disclosed that Adidi and his gang, who relocated to Lagos from Delta State, demanded a ransom of N100 million for the release of the victims, but later reduced it to N6 million.
However, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, rescued the victims six days later in a bush at Elemoro, Ajah.
A member of the gang, who posed as a bricklayer in the bush, was arrested and he provided information that aided SARS operatives in its pursuit of other members of the gang.
A police source, who pleaded anonymity, said Adidi was arrested in August but escaped when SARS attempted to use him to arrest two other members of his gang.
The source said: “An exchange of gunfire ensued between the police and the kidnappers, who Adidi had lured out.
“They opened fire the moment they saw the officers and Adidi took advantage of the situation to escape.”
Vanguard further gathered that Adidi finally met his Waterloo on October 26, when SARS operatives tracked him down to his hideout at Ekenwan area in Benin, Edo State, and arrested.

Archbishop condemns Reps for jumping over NASS gate

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Martins, on Monday expressed disgust at the behaviour of some members of the House of Representatives for jumping over the gate of the National Assembly Complex.
Martins said in Lagos that the lawmakers ought to have restrained themselves from throwing decorum to the wind, no matter the level of provocation.
“It gives us a lot of concern that the officials of the National Assembly have to climb the fence in order to arrive at what is supposed to be a hallowed chamber.
“It’s, indeed, a disgrace to the whole nation; it’s  a real disgrace to the whole process of governance as represented in the legislative arm of government.
“And I think that whatever it is that lead to it should not have happened at all because it doesn’t give us confidence that the security forces are going to get right the whole process of elections that are forthcoming next year.
“Legislators should recognise their dignity as legislators, and therefore whatever it is that is disagreement among them should not go to such an extent.
“They are representing the whole nation as well as individual citizens within Nigeria.
“And herefore, whatever their disagreements are they should not in any way let it go to this kind of extent that we saw. I think that, that portends a lot of danger  for the nation.”

Sierra Leone: Ebola burial team dumps bodies

Workers employed by Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health to bury Ebola victims took drastic action this week in a dispute over pay, abandoning the bodies of 15 people in the street.
Some were paraded at the entrance to a hospital Monday to stop people from entering. Another body was placed outside the entrance to a hospital administrative building.
The workers have gone on strike because they say they are owed seven weeks of their "hazard" pay of $100 a week.
Burying Ebola victims is a dangerous task, since the deadly virus is spread through contact with bodily fluids.
The bodies were all cleared as of Tuesday after burial teams working for the Red Cross, rather than the state, were called in.
The National Ebola Response Center has announced the sacking of all involved in the strike, said Sidi Yahyah Tunis, a spokesman for the center.
Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are the three West African countries at the heart of the current Ebola outbreak.
The vast majority of more than 15,000 Ebola cases and more than 5,000 deaths caused by the virus in recent months have occurred in those three nations, according to a World Health Organization report out Friday.

His bullet-riddled body was found in the early of hours of Sunday at Ejule, which is about 8 kilometres away from the school.
The cultists were said to have fired sporadic shots into the air to scare away people living around the area before taking the lecturer to an unknown destination.
The murdered lecturer, simply called Otis, was a renowned agriculturist, who was a former pre-degree director and a lecturer in Faculty of Agriculture in the Department of Agric Economics and Extension at the university.
Otis, who was said to be a jovial, nice and well-respected person, also held a chieftaincy title from his home town, Kabba, headquarters of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of the state.
The body of the lecturer has been deposited at the university teaching hospital.
Some lecturers and students expressed shock over the incident, and decried the incessant killings in the institution.
They called on the management to take urgent steps to address the ugly trend.
When contacted, KSU Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, said the body had summoned an emergency meeting to look into the case of the murdered lecturer.
Meanwhile, a 400 level Mathematical Science student of the school, Jimoh Faruk, has also been killed by the cult group.
The student was killed, according to a source, around the dreaded Stadium Road on Saturday night.

Report: China building airstrip' island

China is building an island in the South China Sea that could accommodate the country's first airstrip in bitterly contested waters, according to satellite images analyzed by IHS Jane's Defence Weekly.
Reclamation at Fiery Cross Reef on the western edge of the disputed Spratly islands is creating a land mass that is more than 3,000 meters (2 miles) long and between 200 to 300 meters (650 to 980 feet) wide -- large enough to construct a runway and apron, the publication said.
The South China Sea is the subject of numerous rival -- often messy -- territorial claims, with China, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam disputing sovereignty of several island chains and nearby waters.
The areas in dispute include fertile fishing grounds and potentially rich reserves of undersea natural resources.
Jane's said that Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan had built airfields on reefs and islands in the contested waters.
"The work at Fiery Cross thus brings parity but is likely to cause alarm among the other claimants," the report said.
"Given its massive military advantage over the other claimants in terms of quantity and quality of materiel, this facility appears purpose-built to coerce other claimants into relinquishing their claims and possessions, or at least provide China with a much stronger negotiating position if talks over the dispute were ever held."
The report said that dredgers were creating a harbor large enough to receive tankers and warships.
Construction 'legitimate'
But Maj. General Luo Yuan of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) told the state-run Global Times that construction was justifiable and that the infrastructure would improve the living standards of soldiers stationed there.

Banker 'fit' to enter plea over HK murders

By Paul Armstrong, CNN

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2014 04:50 GMT
A court in Hong Kong has ruled that a British banker charged with the grisly murder of two Indonesian women is psychologically fit to enter a plea on both counts.
However, the case has been adjourned until July next year to allow for more than 200 pieces of forensic and DNA evidence to be analyzed.
Rurik Jutting has been in custody since November 1 following the discovery of the bodies of the two women at his home in an upscale residential complex in the city's Wan Chai district.
His last court appearance on November 10 was adjourned after prosecutors requested psychological assessments of the former employee of Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
Jutting, who has yet to enter a plea, appeared in court Monday unshaven and wearing the same dark sunglasses. He spoke only once to confirm that he understood what was happening.
Body in suitcase
The 29 year old is accused of killing Sumarti Ningsih, 25, whose decomposing body was discovered inside a suitcase on the balcony of his high-rise apartment.
The other woman, Seneng Mujiasih, 29, was found on the floor of the one-bedroom apartment with her throat slashed.
Police say Jutting called them to the apartment early on November 1. They say Mujiasih had been killed that day, and Ningsih five days earlier.
The principal magistrate, Ms Bina Chainrai, ruled that Jutting would remain in custody until the hearings resume on July 1.

WOW Nigerian Government to cut fuel subsidy by half in 2015

The Federal Government has said it plans to cut subsidies on petroleum products by half next year after sharp falls in global crude prices, spurred a reversal of its 2015 budget downwards.
President Goodluck Jonathan submitted the revised budget figures to lawmakers last week, proposing to spend 458.68 billion naira ($2.59 bln) on petrol subsidy in 2015, down from 971.14 billion naira presented for 2014.
It also assumed further cuts to petrol subsidies in 2016 to 408.68 billion naira and 371.18 billion naira for 2017.
The Minister of finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has proposed lowering the assumed benchmark oil price for the 2015 budget to $73 per barrel from the $78 proposed in September, after global crude prices collapsed.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told Reuters last week that declines in the price of oil, which has lost almost 30 percent since July, would impact the economy, requiring the government to cut non-essential spending and raise more revenues.
Recall that the FG tried to end subsidy in 2012 in efforts to cut government spending and encourage badly needed investment in local refining, doubling the price of a litre of petrol overnight to about 150 naira ($0.93) from about 65 naira
The budget proposals assumed an exchange rate of 162 naira to the U.S. dollar for 2015, weaker than 160 naira assumed for 2014. It expects the naira to weaken further to 163.50 in 2016, reaching 165 in 2017.

3 priests, teacher arrested in sex abuse case

By Al Goodman, CNN
UPDATED: NOV 24, 2014 17:27 GMT
It might all have remained a dark secret, if a young man who was an alleged victim of sexual abuse hadn't written a letter to the Vatican. And then gotten a surprise phone call from Pope Francis, according to a Spanish digital newspaper.
On Monday, Spanish police arrested three Catholic priests and a religion teacher on suspicion of abusing a minor, Spain's interior minister announced.
A court statement from Granada confirmed the arrests of four people "for a case of sexual abuse," and said it would hear initial charges before a judge within three days. The investigation is under seal.
The arrests came a day after the Archbishop of Granada and other clerics took the unusual step of prostrating themselves in the cathedral during Sunday Mass, "asking forgiveness for the sins of Church, for all of the scandals that have, or might have, occurred among us," the Granada Archdiocese website reported.
The archbishop usually does that once a year, on Good Friday, but he lay on the floor of the cathedral Sunday due to the seriousness of the allegations, a Granada Archdiocese spokeswoman said. The archbishop earlier had removed an unspecified number of priests from their duties, pending an investigation, she said.
The arrests of three priests in a single day over sexual abuse allegations is the biggest case of its kind in Spain, said a spokesman in Madrid for the Spanish church leadership, known as the Episcopal Conference.
Since 1997, 10 priests have been convicted of sexual abuse, in individual cases, most recently in 2010, the spokesman said.
But this latest case caught the attention of the Vatican and the Pope, thanks to a man, reportedly now 24, who wrote to the Vatican to say he was sexually abused when he was underage by church figures in Granada.
The Spanish online journal Religion Digital published what it said was a conversation between Pope Francis and the alleged victim from August 10, with the Pope asking for forgiveness in the name of the church.
The alleged victim was cited with a fictitious name, Daniel, Religion Digital reported, adding that 12 people, 10 of them priests, were under investigation.
The Pope has called for "zero tolerance" of sexual abuse by clerics and has said Catholic bishops "will be held accountable" for failing to protect children from such abuse.

US defence Secretary to step down from post

Chuck Hagel has resigned as US defence secretary after less than two years in the top military post.

President Barack Obama confirmed his resignation and paid tribute to his "class and integrity".
Mr Hagel, 68, a Vietnam war veteran and former Republican senator, said it had been his life's "greatest privilege".
Last month, it was reported that he was sharply critical of the US strategy against Islamic State and in relation to the Syria regime.
He will stay on as secretary until his successor is confirmed.
An unnamed official told the Associated Press news agency that Mr Hagel and Mr Obama both "determined that it was time for new leadership in the Pentagon" and had been discussing the move for weeks.
Mr Obama said Mr Hagel had come to him to discuss the "appropriate time to complete his service".
The US president said he was "extraordinary lucky" to have Mr Hagel by his side as defence secretary and praised him for forging a strong bond with US troops.
Mr Hagel is the first enlisted combat veteran to serve in the role.
In a brief statement, Mr Hagel said it had been the "great privilege of my life to lead and most importantly to serve the men and women of the defence department".

Hagel's 58-41 confirmation was the narrowest ever vote margin for a Pentagon nominee
Analysis, Jon Sopel, North America Editor
Chuck Hagel is a friendly, no-nonsense defence secretary. He was also the one Republican in the White House national security set-up.
But that may be of lesser importance than him being appointed to do one task in the Pentagon, only to find that the job description has changed fundamentally.
He was the man appointed to bring the troops home and pare back the huge defence budget. But then Islamic State came along and all the calculations changed, and Mr Obama and his defence chief found themselves at odds.
There was a lack of clear strategy, perhaps because Mr Obama and Mr Hagel didn't agree on what it should be. And after mid-term political defeats, the president needs a military win. So a change at the top will be an important symbol of that determination.
Which of course leaves the question, did he jump or was he pushed? Probably a bit of both.

Mr Hagel, who served as Republican senator for his home state of Nebraska for 12 years, became critical of US involvement in Iraq despite voting to authorise the war.
He replaced Leon Panetta as defence secretary in Mr Obama's second term, taking on the task of winding down the Afghanistan war and making a military shift towards Asia.
But the future of US military policy has changed amid air strikes against IS in Iraq and Syria.
"The next couple of years will demand a different kind of focus," an unnamed White House official told the New York Times, which first broke the story.
US media report there was increasing tension between Mr Hagel and the administration over decisions in Syria and working styles, citing Hagel confidantes and senior defence officials

Republican Senator John McCain said he knew the defence secretary "was frustrated with aspects of the administration's national security policy and decision-making process".
Mr McCain said Mr Obama needed to realise "current failures on national security more often lie with his administration's misguided policies".
Mr Obama did not name a replacement for Mr Hagel on Monday. Once named, the nominee would have to be confirmed by the Senate.
Among those being considered as replacements for Mr Hagel is Michele Flournoy, the former Pentagon policy chief during Mr Obama's first term.
If nominated and confirmed Ms Flournoy would be the first female US defence secretary.

Cleveland police shoot dead boy, 12, carrying fake gun

A 12-year-old boy has been shot dead by police in the US city of Cleveland, after brandishing what turned out to be a fake gun in a playground.
Police say an officer fired two shots at the boy after he failed to obey an order to raise his hands.
A caller reported the boy to police for scaring people with a gun but said that he did not know if it was real.
One of the officers was in his first year on the local force, the other had more than 10 years of experience.
'Airsoft'
The medical examiner for Cuyahoga County identified the boy as Tamir Rice.

An investigation is now under way into the shooting of Tamir Rice
Cleveland deputy police chief Ed Tomba said the boy was shot twice after pulling the gun from the waistband of his trousers. He died later in hospital.
The boy did not make any verbal threats nor point the gun towards the officers, Mr Tomba added.
Police said the weapon was an "airsoft" replica gun that resembled a semi-automatic pistol, adding that an orange safety indicator had been removed.
The caller said the boy was pulling the gun in and out of his trousers. "I don't know if it's real or not," the caller told police.
But Jeff Follmer, president of the Cleveland police association, said the two officers at the scene were not told about the caller's comments.
The BBC's David Willis in Washington says an investigation is under way and both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
He says there have already been calls for tighter controls on fake guns, with one local lawmaker - Alicia Reece - saying she intends to introduce legislation that would require fake guns sold in Ohio to be brightly coloured.
Cleveland's police force has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, most notably over a high-profile car chase in 2012 that ended with two deaths and officers firing 137 shots.
The US Justice Department is currently conducting an investigation of the force's pursuit and use-of-force practices.

Messi breaks Spanish goals record

Lionel Messi broke the Spanish league's all-time scoring record after hitting a hat trick in Barcelona's 5-1 victory over Sevilla.
It has been a season of records for the Argentine international who, at just 27, already holds the record as Barcelona's highest ever scorer in European competition.
But all eyes were on the diminutive striker at the Camp Nou stadium to see whether he cold break Telmo Zarra's 59-year-old record of 251 Spanish league goals.
Typical Messi
In the end, Messi didn't just break the record: he equaled it, surpassed it and then extended it in typical fashion.
His first, which tied the record, was a sublime left foot free kick which he bent over the wall into the top left hand corner of the goal.
The second, which broke the record, was a surging run through the heart of Sevilla's defense that ended with Messi exchanging passes and sliding in to finish at the far post.
His Barcelona teammates celebrated with him on the pitch by picking him up and throwing him in the air.
But Messi wasn't finished there.
He scored another fantastic goal to extend the record with a left foot shot on the run into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

"Brutal record"
"We are happy for everything. Obviously for Leo, it is an incredible, brutal record," Barcelona midfielder Xavi told AFP after the game.
"It is historic and I am very happy for him because he deserves it as a person and obviously as a player."
More importantly, however, the comprehensive victory allowed Barcelona to close the gap on Real Madrid at the top of the table who had beaten Eibar 4-0 earlier on Saturday.
There were signs too that Messi's record might not stand for almost six decades, as the previous one had.
Cristiano Ronaldo again scored twice, his 197th goal in just 177 matches.

13-YR-OLD GIRL’S HORROR: ‘My stepfather serially raped, impregnated me!’

By Favour Nnabugwu and Leo
Aligwo

Parents and adults generally have responsibility to care for, educate, and discipline children but when the children begin to detest the parents, then the situation calls for concern.
13 -year-old Blessing Chia allegedly fell victim to regular beating by his step father, Mr Benjamin Richard, 35, who, as she claimed, later lusted after her.
The allegation by the girl that the step father serially raped her to the point of her getting pregnant is a subject of police investigations.
Blessing told Sunday Vanguard, “The first time my mother was not around, he took cane and was beating me and told me that if I messed up, he would kill me, that if I shouted or if my mummy heard anything about it, he was going to kill me.
“So the one that happened on Thursday, November 13, 2014,   I told him that I would tell my mummy and I dared to see if he would kill me. So l told my mummy.

Richard,the suspect, strongly denies allegation
He raped me four times, the first time was when my mother travelled to Makurdi, Benue State.’’
Blessing’s mother, Mrs Grace Richard, 30, said her daughter reported to her that the stepfather raped her but her husband denied it when she confronted him.
She confirmed that it was during the period she traveled to her home state (Benue) and left her daughter in the care of her stepfather that he first allegedly raped her.
‘’That was two months ago when I travelled to Makurdi and she told me immediately I came back,” the mother said.
“My husband denied and even threatened to beat me black and blue if l ever asked him such a question again”.
Grace said she was not, in the real sense of it, married to the father of Blessing whom she had at the age of 17 before the father died in a motor accident last year.
Blessing’s mother said she and her current husband have been together for four years during which she had a boy child for him. The boy, she said, lives with her mother-in-law.
Mrs Martina Moses, Grace’s elder sister, told Blessing’s story to Sunday Vanguard.
‘’I was in Gwagalape on Thursday when my sister called me around 5pm to help settle an issue Blessing had with a neighbour over SIM card.’’
She continued: ‘’While in their house, I saw my sister’s husband and I asked him where my sister was. He said my sister was on her way to home, that he sent her to collect money from a friend.
‘’I then asked after my niece, Blessing. Richard got angry and said the girl was very stubborn, that he was going to tie her up in a room before dropping me off . He said if he didn’t tie the girl up, she would run away. He tied the girl’s hands and feet in my presence. I pleaded on my niece’s behalf with his stepfather to no avail.

‘’Later that night, my sister came to my house around 11pm and I asked her what she was doing outside that late. She told me that her husband was threatening her.
‘’Grace was afraid to go back home because she was sure Richard would beat her up. That prompted her to go to her elder sister, Martina’s house, so that Martina could follow her back home in order to stop Richard carrying out his threat of beating her. And because it was late in the night, Grace was forced to pass the night at the elder sister’s place.
‘’The following day, being Friday, Martina sent somebody to Richard’s place to bring Blessing. But rather releasing Blessing to the man Martina sent, Richard took the girl on his motorcycle to Martina’s house himself.
‘’On getting to Martina’s house, Blessing ran into her aunty’s arms, and wept profusely after which she claimed that her mother’s husband raped her four times.
‘’After listening to Blessing, Martina said she took the girl to Richard and asked her to repeat what she told her inside in the presence of the stepfather and Blessing repeated everything.
“Right there, l told my sister and her husband that the rape issue will not be swept under the carpet. l asked my brother to go and report the issue at a police station, but my brother advised that we first report the matter to Richard’s mother. It was then that Richard’s mother said we should take Blessing for test, and that took us to Aso police station where we were referred to Nyanya police station since the alleged rape took place in Nyanya.
“When we got to Nyanya police station, the police interrogated the stepfather and he denied yet again. It was at that point the police locked him up.
‘’The police told Richard that the only thing that could save him was if the result of the test indicated that Blessing was still a virgin, but the test showed that Blessing had not only been deflowered but also pregnant. Meanwhile, the police that had the hospital report with them did not disclose the number of weeks Blessing has been pregnant.
‘’We went back to the police station the following day after Richard was detained, only to be told that his father had bailed him.
‘’On getting back to Richard’s house after he was bailed, he tried to convince his neighbours to accept that Blessing was wayward, but his neighbours refused to play along with him. Rather they claimed they heard Blessing screaming on that Thursday but did know the reason.’’
The investigating police officer, IPO, in charge of the case, who did not want her name mentioned, told Sunday Vanguard that Blessing was indeed pregnant but that investigations were in progress.
At press time, Richard had been re-arrested by the police God help Us and save us !!!

Obama unveils new immigration plan USA

Obama: 'You can come out of the shadows'
By Jim Acosta and Stephen Collinson, CNN live

Obama unveils new immigrationWashington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is ordering the most sweeping overhaul of the immigration system in decades, despite Republican claims he is acting illegally by moving unilaterally to shield five million undocumented immigrants.

Obama rejected accusations by conservatives that he is offering a free pass to undocumented immigrants and warned in a prime-time address that he would bolster border security and make it harder for unauthorized outsiders to get into the country.

"Today our immigration system is broken and everybody knows it," Obama said. "It's been this way for decades and for decades we haven't done much about it."

Obama is pressing ahead and making broad changes to the immigration system without the consent of Congress, which has failed to pass a comprehensive reform bill. The announcement prompted an angry response from House Speaker John Boehner.

"By ignoring the will of the American people, President Obama has cemented his legacy of lawlessness and squandered what little credibility he had left," Boehner said. "Republicans are left with the serious responsibility of upholding our oath of office."

A key element of Obama's plan is to instruct immigration authorities to target those undocumented immigrants who are dangerous rather than law-abiding undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and residents and others.

He said they will go after "felons, not families. Criminals, not children. Gang members, not a Mom who's working hard to provide for her kids."

"We'll prioritize, just like law enforcement does every day," he said.

The changes will offer those who qualify the chance to stay temporarily in the country for three years, as long as they pass background checks and pay back taxes. But they will not be offered a path to eventual citizenship or be eligible for federal benefits or health care programs. And, in theory, the measures could be reversed by a future president.

"If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. If you're a criminal, you'll be deported. If you plan to enter the U.S. illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up," Obama said.

Chris Hemsworth id People magazine's Sexiest man Alive for 2014

By Bruna

The wait is finally over! Jimmy Kimmel had the honor of announcing this year's handsome Hollywood hunk that snagged the title of People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2014, and it's Chris Hemsworth! After playing a fun game of Q&A with the audience, Hemsworth answered their yes or no questions with a voice changer and mask via Skype, until they finally guessed hisidentity (thanks to some superhero questions)."Thank you very much for the trophy. I'm most excited about the alive portion of that statement. I'm flattered. Thank you, Jimmy," Hemsworth said, and added that there is no hard feelings from his also-hot brother, Liam Hemsworth."Liam is good. We've been throwing sexy looks back and forth all week. So he's been a real team player through this." He continued, "I like everything there is about being sexy, to pursing the lips the right way to squinting at the essentialtime. Thank you, Matt [Damon], and all the other previous intelligent men. This is based on an IQ test, not just the physical appearance." As for who Chris would like to thank--"My parents, I guess, for putting this together." "Thank you for being here tonight. I'm glad you're excited. You're here on a very big night. Tonight I am going to reveal the identity of People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. I want you to know I withdrew myself from consideration. I didn't think it would be fair since I'm the one making the announcement," Kimmel joked at the top of the show. "Not only am I going to reveal the sexiest man alive, we're going to beam him in here via Skype to officially anoint him. I never felt more powerful or less attractive than I do today. I had to keep this a secret for like a week. As you know, sexy secrets are even harder to keep than regular secrets. What an honor to be trusted with this information. Sexiest man alive is the nuclear launch code of magazine covers." "Last year it was Adam Levine. The year before that was Channing Tatum and the year before that was Bradley Cooper. I actually know way too much about this, I think. The criteria for sexiest man alive is very strict. First of all, you must be sexy. Secondly, you must be alive. If you're ugly or dead, forget about it, you're not going to win. We will see who does win in about ten minutes. Is it awin? I hope it's somebody fat this year, I really do." Speaking of Levine, he was shocked to be given the honor. "As a musician, you have fantasies that you want to win Grammys, but I didn't really think that this was on the table," the singer told the mag at the time. "I was just amazed and stunned and it almost seemed like they were kidding, but they weren't, so that's cool." This extremely hot list includes previous winners George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Depp, Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Ryan Reynolds and Ben Affleck, to name a few
